Title: 1988 Cougar XR7 - probably best for parts
Post by: 4thqtr on May 26, 2009, 02:53:24 PM
1988 Cougar XR7, approximately 120,000 miles, located in Philadelphia, PA, clear title - currently non-running.
I ran out of time, money and space on this Cougar, so I'm selling her as-is. A rebuilt 302 shortblock with 9,000 miles was swapped in over the winter, as well as all the HO goodies. What happened was after the swap was completed and the car was running, the H-pipe went bad, damaging the valves on the driver's side with possible damage to that head as well. Also during the brief time the car was running, the brake pedal felt a low, so that needs to be looked at.
The good things about the car: 99% rust free, clean underbody, Weld Draglites with matching tires and about 90% tread left, rebuilt AOD about 3,000 miles ago, the motor is sitting on a set of Chuck's motor mounts, all glass is good, dual manual seats (weird, right?)
The bad: car is very dirty inside and out (will need a good cleaning), seats are squished with typical driver's seat lean, exterior is missing some trim pieces, the driver's side door has been repainted at some point, paint overall is toast, needs engine, brake, exhaust work.
The car is pictured in my sig and the banner up top, more pictures are coming! Asking $550 or best offer, flexible. If I can't sell the car whole, I will be forced to part her out (I know, I know I'm horrible) so stay tuned if it comes down to that.

ok,, you say it needs a motor,, due to the h-pipe? its possible the valve seats and valves burned but did you compression test it. if that passes, why not just get it running and so it could be driven off.
The brake thing could be a simple inline splice some where or just simply cut the bad lind and pinch it off and tell the buyer to take it easy on the way out.
I cant see this needing a motor unless theres other issues. This would make a good car ,, hell with the paint issues as thats pretty common with all of us.
too many members up in your area to let this one fall off the grid.

No, chances are good the motor itself is fine, but there is visible damage to the valves. The brakes are probably fine for a little while, but something that definitely needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Trust me, I go back and forth on this car on a daily basis since it's so close to being done, but these complications came at a bad time at this point in my life. The smartest thing to do would be to cut my losses immediately. Appreciate the input.

I'll keep you in mind for the Welds if it comes down to parting. I can't think of anything I'd trade for, as I realized I took on one project too many (a little late :punchballs: )

I've been getting quite a few requests for parts, but my preference is obviously to sell the car whole to someone who has the resources to work on it. I have been keeping track of everyone's PMs though, so I will let you guys know what happens.

. My problem is lack of room. We have five(!) cars parked here at the moment. We need to come up with a way to save this beast. If I had spare heads I'd donate them.

Hey Guys,
I'm going to start stripping the interior of the car in a few hours, and begin the exterior over Tuesday and Wednesday. There's two options at this point.
Option A: I will take $350 as the car stands right now, if the entire car can be removed by Wednesday at the absolute latest.
Option B: If anyone wants the stripped chassis, they can have it for free. At the minimum, it will include the engine block, transmission, 8.8 traction-lock rear, all glass and all sheet metal including doors. Again, must be removed by Wednesday at the absolute latest.
Car zip code is 19153. Because time is an issue, I would prefer anyone with a whole-hearted offer to call me at 518-396-6345 after 9am EST today instead of PMing. Thanks!

What trans is in the car? ant problems with it? I could possibly use some parts for my mustang (I know, I know, no one hurt me!) I wouldnt use anything but motor/trans/rear/and the welds If anyone would be interested in the roller as I will put a 4cyl mustang rear end back in it. Only problem is Im in NC and I definately cant make it to MD by wednesday! lol

If you were close enough I could get the car as a roller, I would jump at it. How much would you think it is to ship a car like that all the way out here?
