A shop manual would probably be best......
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature?_nkw=1988+cougar+shop+manuals&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=1987+cougar+shop+manuals&_osacat=0 (http://"http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature?_nkw=1988+cougar+shop+manuals&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=1987+cougar+shop+manuals&_osacat=0")

Or a Chilton manual......I think the Hayne's manuals suck. Chilton's go more in-depth with more pictures

a MOTOR brand manual should provide you with the nessasary info for you to tear down and fix your v6.
if you want more details than you need though an FSM is the best one to get. last i checked you could still get it from ford(about a year ago)
