Title: T-bird got hit.............
Post by: thunderjet302 on May 15, 2009, 06:04:52 PM
The 95 NOT the 88 thank god:D

I was driving on a side street near my house today and I didn't have a stop sign at the intersection I was at. A guy who had the stop sign blew it and I T-boned him at about 20mph:mad:. It was all his fault since he blew the stop sign but man did I screw up his car when I hit it. He was driving a 94 Geo Prizm (ie the Chevy Corolla) which was a bit rusty. It smashed in both doors, the rocker, and the quarter panel. As for my T-bird the bumper cover and bumper fell of with nary a scratch. The bumper support is bent a bit on the driver's side and the turn signal is screwed. Other wise no damage to the hood, radiator support, or fenders. I still have the bumper cover and bumper as well.

Now the fun part. This yahoo has one of those shiznitty little insurance companies for people who can't afford insurance (I have Allstate) and it's going to be hell trying to get his insurance company to fix the T-bird. Since I still have all the parts for the T-bird he knocked off the body shop I know said they could straighten out the bumper support and reinstall the bumper and cover for $176. Through the insurance (because by law they have to use new parts) it would cost $1,576 . Trying to get that much money from this guys insurance is unlikely so I think I'm just going to pay the $176 and fix the car. If this guy tries going after me through the insurance he's getting a $1,576 bill.......

Is it an Illinois state law that requires them to use new parts? I've never heard of that before.  Every insurance company I've ever been with has never had an issue with using used/reconditioned parts. I've even requested that they use them once.

Insurance, that is what it is, cheap or not. No bodily injury, Demand they fix your car.

I should have made it clearer but you can use used parts on a car. If the repair was done through the insurance they would have to replace the metal bumper bar instead of just pulling it out. When insurance work is doen they are not allowed to reuse components that were damaged in the collision. If I pay for it out of pocket it's no biggie though :hick:

The Geo driver is fine. I hit him on the passenger side and he was the only person in the car. It was a 20 mph collision.

I'm going to call this guys insurace on Monday and see what's up. I'd rather have his insurance company pay for it after all it was his fault. If they agree to pay for it I'll probably just get it fixed for $176 and keep the rest. It all depends on how much of a PITA it is to deal with these guys.

At this point I'm just thankful it was a slow speed (20 mph) collision and no one got hurt, although if I was driving the 88 I'm pretty sure that guy might have been injured........by me :beatyoass:

Glad your ok dude and i know where your coming from. A few years back my first 85 got rearended while i was cruising the strip and the guy was going like 60 in a 25. Buckled both rear quarters, destroyed bumper cover and support and smashed bothe tails. Then the prick had enough balls to try and run( we got his plate number). He hit me hard enough to shove it across 3 lanes of traffic. The insurance company paid me like 1500 and mine let me keep the car without buying it back. Now if that would have been the 85 i drive now, i'd be in jail for manslaughter cuz in my area  mines like the ONLY tbird around for the 4 eyes=]

You got parts for a 95? :hick: Amazinly the bumper cover is reuseable. The clips jut ripped out and all the holes for them are intact. It's a got a minor scuff but that's it.

I've looked up info on this guys insurance company and getting them to pay looks like a long drawn out PITA process. I think I'm going to call Allstate today and see if they will go after the insurance company for me. I'm sans a T-bird till this one gets fixed. I now get to DD a 98 Dodge Intrepid. Sweet.....

Have you ever driven a Dodge Intrepid, let alone one with 148,000 miles on it? Lets just say it's not the most fun car to drive, especially when things like the power locks, radio, brake lights, and interior lights decide when or if they want to work. Yes I've been at this  car quite a few times with a multi meter trying to find shorts but to na avail. It works fine when I check it :hick:

This is one of the reasons I have a daily driver. Plus it was raining yesterday so the 88 was in the garage with it's cover on. You can see it in the picture with the bumper cover support (the black thing).

You know after thinking about it I'm glad this was a slow speed (20-25 mph) collision. I mean the T-bird just destroyed the passenger side of his car at 20 mph. At 40 mph or so on a main street I would have killed the guy.......3700 lb T-bird vs a 2800 lb Geo would have been bad.

The car's going to the body shop Wednesday morning. I should hopefully have it back by Friday or Saturday morning. Allstate is covering it and then going after the guys insurance company.

Just hang in there man! 3 days isn't really that bad. A month or two on the other hand.... When I got rear ended in my 97 SHO I was without my car for a month, wanna know what the insurance company got me as a rental? A purple PT Cruiser, nothing will make you feel any gayer than rolling around in a wussy little 150hp PT Cruiser when you are used to driving a 238hp V8 SHO.

Fixed :D Allstate fixed the car and is now going after the guy's insurance company for the repair money.

Oh thank god that Dodge is gone. I'm waiting till I have to do the brakes on that car (soon). It's got 4 wheel disks, plus all the roters probably need to be changed :punchballs: I can't believe how much of that car needs work and it's only 11 years old with 140,000 miles on it. The funny thing is that the 2.7 in it is still running, but with low oil pressure. Chrysler 2.7 V6s are know to sludge up and die, but not this one :flame:

I was wondering about them. Guy at work bought an Intrepid with no or a bad motor and got a low mileage one that ended up dying too shortly after. Then there is an LHS that is dead at my Grams rental house. I tried selling it for them, then the kid beat the piss out of it (caved in the roof even). So then I started to try and buy it. 2 years later the car still sits.

They have until the first of July to GTFO since she decided that she can only afford $800 of the $1040 a month it is and is only paying that. All this after my Gramps worked with her the last 3 or so years since her husband died on paying the rent late and under.

So I am hoping she leaves the Chrysler and the MPV that is dead in the garage so I can have them.

Car looks great. Too bad you couldnt have gotten an SC front cover!

From what I found it looks like your right. Without the fog lights the cover looks totally different at a glance.

You feel the same way about your Intrepid as I do about my Catera. Some days I wish it would spontaniously combust others I wish someone would steal it.
