Title: Heater hose ?
Post by: Dansbirds on April 09, 2009, 05:50:19 PM
Well changed the core today, got it down to 3:45 minutes start to finish. Hopefully wont need to do another one for awhile as now all here are done. The hose that runs from the metal tube to the core needed replaced so I got one but my question is this. In the old hose was a small insert that I have pictured. What is it and what is its purpose. I didnt put it back in as I see no value to it but let me know if I should.
jcassity: from what you asked me before to check I did. I checked out the case with the glovebox out and if someone was able to change a core by making a opening in the side of the case then sliding it out I would love to see it done. I would say that myth is busted. There just isnt enough room to get it out if you did happen to hack the case apart in somewhat the right area.

PUT THE INSERT BACK IN THE FEED LINE TO THE HEATER CORE!!!!!
It reduces pressure of the fluid entering the core. Without that, you're simply cutting the cores life expectancy. I've seen enough fox body cores blow in no time when guys don't run those restrictors to know that I would never run without one.

It's a restrictor, and yes it should be in there. If it was at the core end of the hose, it should be relocated to the end nearest to the engine.

Wasn't the move a TSB for gurgling noises?

I don't know. I stole the pictures from this forum. http://forums.stangnet.com/562639-heater-core-restrictor-pictures.html

Also I see in the diagram that it is clamped in place, this one was just stuffed about 2" in the hose, which is best?

I stuck mine back in the factory spot after the heater core replacement. No gurgling noises and it seems to be ok.

Clamp it, that's what I did with mine.

Calm down man, my reply was only meant as informative not meant to be argumentative. You asked me to check when I did the job and report and I did. If Crystal did that fine, I dont see it as being possible due to a severe lack of space for a normal size person. I have gotten plenty of usefull tips/hints/suggestions from you and apologize if you took my reply differently:bowdown:

Crystal IS like 4'8" or something like that.... FWIW -- I currently use a 13 mm 1/4" drive socket as a restrictor. I put it against the firewall with no clamp. That was 3 years ago. I've had ZERO issues...

Not tryin to hi-jack the meaning of this thread, but sockets can ve very useful for our cars, you can use a grinded down 1/2" socket to replace the hardened plastic ball bearing things in the window motors when they eventually (it will happen) break.

I think this should be a sticky.
When I replaced my hoses, I never even knew there was one of these in there. Which probably had something to do with my core failing a few months later.
Now I'm going to have to stick something in there for when I use the core in the winter months. (summer just means bypass and no restrictor)

I have had no faith in a restrictor doing anything in the past. I have also only had one heater core out of probably 6 last longer then 1 year. Last year it only lasted about 5 months while I was doing pizza delivery.
This year, I put a 1/4" drive socket in there, and we will see how it works out. I also managed to get a lifetime warrenty one from orileys after autozone would not let me use their warrenty. I also paid less, and got an older copper looking core. All the ones I have gotten for the last several years were aluminim.
I am actually considering boycotting autozone for what happend that day. They said that my lifetime warrenty expires after 1 year, and that is also wouldn't matter because they didn't have one to replace it. Then they found one in the back that was not in the computer system. Ended up being the wrong part, and when I told them that, they didn't belive me. I am not sure what the heater core was for, but the tubes were on opposite ends, and would not fit, even if it was the right part. They recommended I go to a store about 15 miles away to see if they had one that I thought would fit.
I ended up going about 5 miles down the street and got one at checker(oriley's). Its pretty funny, but I quit going to checker for the same reasons why I am thinking about quitting autozone.

If you really think you need it in your system, Just put a tie strap a big one around your hose, near the inlet of your core, Tighten it down, to restrict it some.

you can't always blame them man. All the stores all train their employees the same way, too read whats on that computer. My personal favorite at least in my area is AZ b/c I've been going there enough that I know everyone there and most of the guys there have a good fair amount of knowledge about what goes where, and their always willing to help me look up part #'s and prices and what not.
Not to mention they always seem to have the parts I need.
I do prefer pep boys a little more but the closest one is 25 mins away so I stick to AZ who is literally almost across the street, but they still got Advance , NAPA, and carquest beat.

Old thread I know, but my heater core finally died completely on easter 105 miles from home. Isn't that usually when happens? It's by-passed for now, gonna be awhile since I don't usually get days off unless it rains. Also thought I might wait till I can get a blower motor and do both at the same time. This is the first heater core I'm going to replace. My last ford(a topaz) had over 300,000 miles on it and was still the original heater core!
P.S. The AZ's around here usually have know-it-all rice lovers, who really don't know much about anything other than honda's. The carquest always tries to sell me more then I actually want/need(came in for spade terminals and he tried selling me new relays?). Napa is over priced. I go to Oreilly's for the price and knowledge, sometimes AZ beats the price tho by a few bucks.

If anyone needs the article the MM&FF did on replacing the heater core let me know. I have a copy and can email it to you.

I swapped mine in about an hour. Nothing to it. I got mine from Autozone and have never had an issue with it in three and a half years.
