Don't feel right posting this in the engine tech forum cause it's not a fox, but, does anybody have any insight on dualing out an mn-12 bird? I called a few shops today, and most want around 500 bucks (since my first self - installed exhaust system didn't go too well, this seems the best way to go right now). The shops say that they use 3 inch piping from the cats back, delete all the merging pipes, run my choice of ler, and polished stainless tips. Does this price seem a little steep, I mean without swapping manifolds and whatnot?
i paid 434 for the exhaust alone on my 99 cougar all 2.5 inch stainless steel from the cat back.
You know thats not really out of the ball park. No H or X pipe though? Wouldn't you want to equalize your exhaust pressure?
Sounds about right then, the qoute was with flowmaster 50 series lers ( personally, I don't really care for flowmasters). Thanks for the info.
He said he would cut out the merging pipes and run straight back (well surely not exactly straight lol) to the s and tails.
It's the 3 inch piping thats strikes me a little odd. I guess it would be all custom welded stuff.
Since Saturday I will be Cougarless:mad: Figured i would do a few mods to the bird. May get some lowering springs too in the near future.
The mn-12's don't have room for two pipes. The stock setup is almost molded to the bottom of the car. It was to aid in areodynamics.
If its a v-6, there is no need for a crossover pipe. I don't know if it would help a 4.6 or not. Even still, a 3 inch pipe should be fine for either motor.
I had true duals on my old 'Bird. 2.25" pipes from the manifolds back with a DI/DO Magnaflow ler. IIRC it was a little over 500 to get that done.
Did you notice a difference in power? How did it sound?
Yikes. I won't EVER buy an MN12. The exhaust alone looks like a PITA
It made a difference, but the cats were dying and smelled like rotten eggs so I know they were restricting it.
Here's an old vid of it.

That why I sold it after I got the Mk 7. The screwed up exhaust is just the beginning with those. lol
I paid $700 for 2.25 duals with x pipe. I provided my own cats and lers.
http://www.supercoupeperformance.com has a dual exhaust kit if I remember right. Also, flowmaster makes a catback, but it is not dual.
I have the Dynomax cat-back kit on my '96. I installed it myself and couldn't be happier with the tone; it has a very mellow and smooth sound.
After four years, however, it is beginning to rust from the inside-out. I never even considered true duals after seeing the underside of the car for the first time. I've read about the nightmare of installing headers on an MN12, so I can't imagine anything else would be easy.
You can drop about $280 + shipping for the Dynomax kit and install it yourself. That is, of course, unless you're dead set on the idea of true dual exhaust.
Well I really just want a good sound, And yes I have thought about the dynomax cat back, and it is cheaper....
Dynomax sounds awesome too, but I'm biased my, dad used to design exhaust systems for them. :D
I know it! I picked up some super turbo's, they're the sh*t
$500 is a good price.....

Very nice work on the exhaust on that red bird, BTW. Nice clean install.
, starting to sound really good now....
That is a very nice install on that red 'Bird. About the only thing I'd have done differently is hang a ler on each end, in the factory locations, instead of the dual input/output one used in those photos. Not that I think two lers would've performed better, I just think having straight pipes through the center of the car would've been easier to fit...
