Title: Whats your next car New or Used?
Post by: 20th anny 5.o on March 25, 2009, 07:12:35 AM
So i got off work at around 4:30 this morning so i am bored waiting to feel tired. What car if any do you plan to purchase next new or used. Mine is a 2004 Jaguar X type 3.o awd, quite affordable especially around Toledo and the surrounding area(Affordable considering i paid 10k for my 99 and the X Type i saw @ Brondes the next week was the same price). If i would have waited another week on buying the 99 cougar i could have had one for the same price.

I would love to "give" my wife the wagon, "take" the Vue and get the 85 back on the road. Or sell the Vue and buy an S4. She's not going for it yet but I'm working on it...:D

I'm picking up a 93 escort wagon this weekend for a beater... $500 everything works even has working a/c :) I'm actually looking forward to getting it as crazy as that sounds. We've been a 1 car household since I sold my Lincoln to start this cougar project.

I've been seriously considering selling the '72 442 and buying a new camaro, you know the 2010 model. I know its probably not a wise investment, but new with a warrany sounds nice. Nothing wrong with the 442, and antiques increase in value every year, but I dunno. Thinking about trying something new.

Theres nothing wrong with wanting a new Camaro, they sound like a pretty neat car......for a Cheby. Just as long as you stick around and don't start hating on us life will roll on.

Funny, Ange and I were looking into a new Traverse yesterday. We've never had a new car, and are getting pretty sick of paying for repairs on our family DD. Something with a FULL warranty looks pretty good right now. We need to upgrade to something bigger in the next year anyway, and cars are the cheapest they can be right now. Besides, we bought the Vue to save money on gas, but the thing is rated for 26mpg highway (AWD), with a 2.2L Ecotec, but the much larger Traverse is rated at 32mpg highway, with a 281hp V6. !

You know for what you pay for and what you end up ultimately getting, I'd rather buy a Ford Flex. It rides nicer and the interior is WAY nicer but thats my inner Ford salesman kicking in.....

Well the reason i am starting double payments on the 99 cougar is so that i may move to part time @ my 3rd shift job so i may start college in a year. The Jag X type is off aways but i can always dream afterall when i was done hating on the 99 -04 Cougars and actually got to drive one while i worked at Micheal Tire Plus i was a converted person.

If I can find an SVO for a good price I would love to have one though.

As much as I'm sure that's true, I can't see myself in an obese Xb, no matter who's name is on it.
Just out of curiosity, I just priced one of each out to see how close they were. Before incentives, they're very nearly the same price, optioned out the same way (AWD, roof rack, block heater, and remote start are the only cost options). The Traverse was $40,490 and the Ford was $39,759. But whilst Ford is offering $1000 cash back, GM is offering $5500. That's a fair bit of coin. So, after rebates it's as follows.
Traverse $34,990
281hp 266ft./lb. 3.6L VVT DOHC 24v DI V6 6-spd auto 83.3L tank 22/32/25mpg 8-seats (2 buckets-60/40 3 bench-60/40 3 bench) Pass. Vol. 4336L Cargo 681L (with two large dogs, this matters most) Seats down 3296L 245/70R17 4925lb 5 year 160k powertrain, 3 year 60k complete waranty
What the Chevy has that the Ford doesn't (optioned like I want it). Direct Injection Roof Rack (the Ford only has rails) Oil Life Monitoring System On-Star Enhanced Rollover Protection Immobiliser (Ford doesn't say if it has this)
Flex $38,759
262hp 248ft./lb. 3.5L VVT DOHC 24v V6 6-spd auto 72.7L tank 21/31/??mpg (rounded up) 7-seats (2 buckets-60/40 3 bench-50/50 2 bench) Pass. vol. 4412L Cargo 415L Seats down 2355L 235/60R18 6151lb (WTF?) 5 year 100k powertrain, 3 year 60k complete warranty
What the Ford has that the Chevy doesn't (optioned like I want it). Heated Mirrors 6-disk changer Dual-zone air keypad locks AC-outlet 3rd row into floor heated and power front seats Steering wheel audio Compass
The towing capacity is a fair bit higher on the Traverse too, but I'd never use it anyway, so that doesn't really matter to me. The are very comparable, and the Ford does have a few extra goodies, but for the price and the fact that I need interior space and better fuel economy more than goodies, I'm still looking at the Traverse. It actually looks good to me too, which I know is totally subjective, but I'm the one looking to buy the car. ;)

We'll see. Things are getting better... for now. As long our situation doesn't go completely downhill in the next year, this is looking like the lead contender for our family.
And to be honest, I hadn't even bothered to really look into the Flex until you mentioned it. It does look like a pretty nice machine, aside from the exterior design.

It would be kind of nice to pull into my Dad's driveway in a Flex. I despise Toyota, and he's a die-hard. He recently told me that he feels the need to vomit every time he sees a Flex, yet his next car will be a Venza. The Flex looks like a Ferrari next to that bar of soap.

as someone else mentioned, now is the time to buy.you also get a tax break next year if you buy a new vehicle after December 31 2008.

You'd probably be able to get a Saturn Vue even cheaper than the Traverse, now that Saturn is going away. It's the same car under the skin, so warranty/repairability wouldn't be an issue. Resale would suck though, butif you got it cheap enough to begin with that should help...

That's the Saturn Outlook you're thinking about. The Vue is still a (POS) Theta car, and only seats 5. The Vue we have now won't hold two car seats and a booster in the bench row without slamming the doors and having the booster 'shift' a little (we've had the chance to try this out when we take our nephew for the night sometimes). The Outlook/Traverse/Enclave/Acadia are all (awesome) Lambda cars. But I agree, we were looking into the Outlook. I think it looks even better than the Traverse, and the options are pretty much identical, but Saturn is only offering $4000 cash back. Something about that no-dicker-sticker is putting me off too. It depends on who's got the better deal when the time comes to buy, and the fact that there is no Saturn dealer in Antigonish. That shouldn't matter, though, since we bought our Vue in Halifax.
*edit* I just did the same pricing scheme with the Outlook, and it's $250 less (before rebates) with bigger wheels, and the delivery allowance is actually $4,000 to $5,000. Hmh. :p

I'd like to buy a brand new DD but I think I'm just going to keep my 95 till it dies. It's only got 77,000 on it so it should last a few more years. Plus I like the idea of not having a car payment. I can put that extra $300 or so in the bank every month instead of giving to the bank to pay off a loan ;)

In a perfect world: My wife drive's the H3 that she wants. I drive the '29 Ford sedan delivery I want. Both DD's.
In a hopeful possibility world: My wife is happy with her Blazer after it's paid off and I drive my Fairlane after I drop a 302/AOD in it or find a totalled early 2000's Lincoln LS for a donor. Both DD's.
A realistic world: Wife complains about driving her Blazer w/non-working 4x4, and I continue to drive my py Saturn SC2, (and Jeep GC in the winter) Both current DD's.
My next car? Whatever I can find for under $400.
And if this weather keeps up: A boat!

Ahh yes, the Outlook. I kinda lost track of Saturn after the demise of the only real one, the S-series ;)
Don't forget that you're likely to get more for your Vue at a Saturn dealer than you would at a Chevy dealer... assuming there are still Saturn dealers around when you pull the trigger...
As for what my next vehicle will be - it'll be whatever I can find for under a grand after I've used the Maxima up...

Well my wife will probably be due for the next new vehicle around here. Her '06 Mercury Mariner has almost 80,000 now so we will probably be in the market for something in the next year or so. The Mariner has been a great vehicle. We just put a set of new tires on it last week (yeah almost 80k on the orig. tires) and other than an A/C recharge we have done nothing but change the oil/filter and air filter. To replace it she has been talking about Dodge Chargers. I told her the only way she's doing that is if its an R/T model, and she insists it must be AWD for winter time. I just don't know how I feel about Chrysler products but oh well it her choice.
Right now I have a '99 F-150 4x4 for a DD. It currently has around 135k but I plan on trying to run it until 200k as long as she holds together. After it lays down I will probably try to find a Superduty with a Powerstroke as I do a lot of towing/farm cs and could use the extra grunt.

My Gf and I bought an 06 Fusion SE with the V6 a few weeks ago. I love it! It only had 15,888 miles on it, not bad for a 3 year old car, and very well taken care of. We just had a sunroof put in and the windows tinted. We also kept our old dd's, I have a 99 ZX2, and she has a 96 Sable, both have over a 100,00 miles on them, so we wanted something we could trust other than the Bird to travel in.

I think if I was gonna do an engine swap in an RX-7 it'd be a 4-cyl turbo. Maybe a 2.3t, maybe a Volvo 2.0. A V8 would ruin the character of the RX-7. Unless, of course, you swapped in an all-aluminum engine, such as an LS1...

Actually from my reading a V8 is only adding 50ish lbs. and improves the weight distribution closer to 50/50. Grassroots motorsports has the $200X challenge each year and a V8 RX-7 won two years in a row. I've considered doing one of these as a side project before. Rotary engines are a bit on the heavy side unlike what people think and they are horrible on gas and have almost ZERO torque.

Yeah, I know the rotaries are thirsty (for both fuel and oil) and torqueless. I didn't realize, and have trouble believing, that they are almost as heavy as a cast iron 5.0 though...

Yeah but think of a 5.0 powered RX-7 would be like a Ford/Mazda Corvette. It'd be like that. The world isn't in short supply of RX-7's with bad apex seals and almost NO compression. Beautiful thing is there is LOTS of aftermarket.

I'd be sceptical about how much closer it would be to 50/50. One of the major handling advantages the RX-7's had was the Rotary engine could be mounted lower and farther back than the conventional piston design.

amen to being skeptical, but here's something to chew on. this is for the 302 into a miata swap. you would think replacing either the 1.6l or even the "larger" 1.8l engines with a big ol 302 would screw the car over for the rest of its life. but here's some stats from a faq on monstermiata.com

Q: Why convert a perfectly good car?
A: I have always liked the sound of a "throaty" high performance V8. I have built many a car kit (Cobras, GT-40's) and the sight and sound of a seemingly innocent Miata waiting for the light to turn, rumbling, shaking, about ready to come out of it's skin, appeals to me. When the light turns and the Miata leaps with that throaty roar, you feel the G's and you see the reactions -that's why. Q: How much weight does the V8 add to the car?
A: Approximately 250 lbs. total. Q: What is the weight distribution after the conversion?
A: With a half tank of gas, 53/47. Q: How is the overall handling of the car affected?
A: The car maintains very good handling. The Miata loves the V8. On acceleration, the rear end squats and holds firm while the front is still nimble & sensitive. After a short drive, the car quickly becomes predictable. Of coarse the car can get out of shape fast with too much throttle; too much power is a problem I can live with.

You've gotta take that with a grain of salt as well. That "FAQ" was put together by V8 Miata enthusiasts. That'd be like a "Why T-Birds are better than Mustangs" FAQ put together by us :hick:

Nice,
I have been having this itch for an Impala lately.....
96 SS, would settle for 94-95 but the 96 had the floor shifter, and the quarter windows were didnt use the fill plate.
04-05 SS, 3.8 SC, love the look, FWD (pro and con), NEW, just like the car overall. I havent driven one yet.
I think its because Ive been driving my Dads Caprice lately. For its size, running like ass, and overall condition, the the thing is a nice car. Handles WAY better than my car, still has good power (even with the CFI 305). I have always like the Bubble SS, but now I am looking deeper into them. They have been holding value around me for the last 8 or so years steady between 8-12k. Which I could get a 04-05 for. But everytime I think SC 3800 I think SHO walking away. Then I think about how much cheap another SHO would be. Plus its a Ford (Yamaha) and I can get a 5 speed.
