Title: How to I get this stupid cam plug in place?
Post by: Grumbles on March 23, 2009, 02:03:19 PM
See thread title. I've tried heating it.  I've tried hammering it. All I've managed to do is batter the  out of the plug :(

i assume you're talking about the one on the back of the block? heating it is going to make it expand, so that wont work.

ive always used a large socket that fits inside the "lip", then tapped it in with a hammer.

Like 32V said, heat's going the the wrong way on the thermometer, try freezing it.  Also, you might consider getting a new one at this point, depending on your previous frustration level.

I meant heating the hole, not the plug.  And yeah, this one's pretty battered.  Gonna have to replace it.

Freeze the plug and heat the hole.OR,as stated above, use a large socket that can be used to tap it in evenly.

I'm getting pretty ticked now.  I have destroyed my SECOND plug after freezing it, heating the hole, and hitting it with everything from a run of the mill hammer to a 20 LB sledge.  Totop it off, the idiots at autozone haven't the slightest clue what I'm talking about, so i have to spell EVERYTHING out for them.

HULK RAGE

Ok, so if Autozone is screwing you around, are you sure they're giving you the correct plug to begin with? They shouldn't be that hard to get in

This is def the way to do it-I left mine in the freezer overnight and it went right in.

Verify that you're getting the right part, esp if the counter monkeys are the usual fare.

Don't heat the head.

Do freeze the plug (overnight is good).

Okay guys, I need your help.  I did a little bit of internet research, and the plug I have DORMAN 555-084 is the WRONG plug for my application.  I'm gonna go hunting for the right one, but if any of you could shoot me a link, that would be excellent.  So far I've turned up nothing.

I had the same problem, be careful how deep you set the new plug.
