Hi all. I was doing the junkyard crawl today and found an 87 xr7 that was in pretty decent shape and about 99% complete. This yard won't sell me the car so here's my question. What should I take from it for my 88 Bird? The axle tag on the door was listed as "m"? Any ideas on that? It has that full console and floor shifter so I will be snagging those parts. Anything else that I am missing? Seems like a really good find so help me out ya'll. Wanting to go back tomorrow.
Thanks everyone,
Glen
M means locking 2.73 gears. If its a 8.8 with 10" rear drums and quad shocks you should grab that unless you already have a TC rear. Interior will be TC style and should have a full center console. If its a floor shift auto, grab that too. See if it has the TC style seats in leather. Those would be really cool to have around here.
Well, my bird has a "w" axle. So once again, I am a little lost on that. Like I said, I am gonna grab the console and shifter stuff. The seats are cloth and are unfortunately the wrong color. Otherwise, I would be alllllll over them. They look awsome. Anything else? And the xr7 has the regulare shocks with a small shock coming off the back at an angle.

W means 3.73 rear. That is the tc rear. Do you have a tc?
No. I think it's a LX. Nothing special but it is a 5.0. Any idea if it's posi or has a locker? It sure doesn't feel like a 3.73
Those are quad shocks on the rear axle.
I would snag the c-pillar emblems (bolted on), most of the interior parts, horn button, center caps and a few other small things.
I guess I could and thend just put them up here to do some bartering. Not into the idea of putting cat emblems on my bird. lol. So, should I look further into this axle thing or just let it go? Also, is the column to floor swap a lot of work?
Maybe you could pull a few things for me?:D
You have a pm...
Horn button for sure, since I haven't found mine yet, lol. There's a couple on here waiting. I just remembered there's a 20th anniv. model at the local yard wayyy out back. I wonder if it's still there. (http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
The column-to-floor shift conversion isnt that hard, since you have access to all the parts you need. Just make sure to grab the bezel around the radio, as the console versions are different from the consolette kind.
As far as your rearend is concerned...(rather, that car of your's..)
was it swapped into your Tbird at one point? Because 5.0 Tbirds mostly had the 7.5 with Trac Loc and a 2.73 ratio, as Haystack mentioned....
What is the history on your car..?
Ok folks, lol. I will definately grab the horn button and whatever xr7 specific stuff I can tomorrow for you guys. LOL. I think I can take a hint.
I have no idea of the history. I bought it from a guy about 2 or 3 months ago. He had it for 2 years, and never left Fort Knox with it. He used to take it out to the training areas to burn the little 14's. But other than that, that's all I know. Anything that I should be trying to figure out? Also, how can I tell if it's an LX or????
What colr is the cloth int??? I'm not that far away if they are nice.
I could use the horn button.
Your VIN will indicate what it is.
It will start out like this: 1FABP
the 6th and 7th will be:
60 = T-Bird, Cougar, '87-'88
61 = T-Bird Sport, '87-'88
62 = T-Bird LX, Cougar XR-7, '87-'88
64 = T-Bird Turbo Coupe, '87-'88
I have a Sport, so for example mine reads 1FABP61 etc etc
BTW, if you wanna know almost everything there is about these cars, up above, over the banner, you'll see link to CoolCats.net and Sam's FoxThundercats.net
These are awesome resources and a good source for enough technical info to drive you bat-shiznit crazy! :bowdown:
THat is freekin funny as hell. Thanks again everyone. BTW, the interior is dark blue. Let me know if you wanna go and we can hook up, head up there together.
BTW, my number is FABP60 so I guess I just have a base model?
does the car have a decent speedometer bezel. need checker pattern cougar xr-7 speedometer bash bezel- and 5 speed bezel.
I'll check on it when I go up there later today. It's an auto though so no dice with the 5 speed stuff
