Title: New carpet/interior install...running into problems
Post by: 87fox351 on March 30, 2005, 12:13:34 PM
Hello all again,
I've finally gotten around to installing the new black interior in my 87 thunderbird. I've switched from the column shift aod, 5.0 to and 351w with t5, so i'm switching to the full center console and new carpet.  Does anyone know how to take out the rear seat so i can get the old carpet from underneath it?  Its hanging up there, i have it off from everywhere else.

Also, is there a template somewhere for where to cut the hole in the sheet metal for the t5 shifter to go thru?  I saw the one on coolcats for the aod floor shifter, but not the t5.  are they the same?

Thanks all,

Later,
aaron

Aaron, get in behind the driver's seat, push in on the seat bottom with your leg as hard as you can, then pull up. That will unhook the seat from that side of the car. Do the same for the passenger side and you're good to go.

You can use the AOD template for the hole, just bend the corners down so the T-5 shifter fits through. Piece of cake.

Hi,
Maybe i'm being a wimp, but that doesnt seem to work.  You're talking about the lower rear seat half right??  Do I need to have the upper seat half out when i do this trick?  I noticed that the upper seat half has triangular wire deal that just clips in the back, is the bottom similar to this?

Thanks,
Aaron

Yes it does have the triangular piece, its on the bottom cushions front edge, thats why eric told you to push it in, so the section will come out of its holder. Also the back of the bottom cushion may also be held in by the seat belt attachment bolt.

You have to take out the bottom before you can take out the top because the top seat is held in by bolt that you can't get to easily without taking the bottom out. Just push on it with your knees, pull up and it should come right out.

That's definitely the way you remove it.  If it has never been removed before it may take some force to get the bars on the seat to let go of the clips they're attached to.

yup...i use my hands and do one side at a time. you should feel the bottom of the seat at the padding in the front for the wire metal support inside the seat bottom. push down and back and then up sort of from under. it should release. then do the otherside.

the clip that the seat sits in looks like this from the side on the floor where the seat is.

the dot represents the seats capture bar and where it sits. you have to move it back and pop it up out of the cup.

BTW...are you the same aaron i sold the black interior too...?
