What's the best way?
I think the best is stock oem ford cable and firewall adjuster. Some argue that the aftermarket adjustable cables don't last as long.
For now,I have the adjustable cable on,and it's fairly new.less than 3ooo miles on it.I just want to make sure it's adjusted right.How tight/loose should it be?
oh.. I would think every car is different, also how high or low you like your pedal to be.
I always did it like this. Make it as loose as possible to where the fork looks like its going to fall off. Than just take up some the slack (little bit don't go crazy). Take car off ramps/jackstands, put in first gear and rev it up with the clutch in and make sure its not grabbing. The other test I did was wide open throttle in 5th gear make sure clutch isn't slipping in 5th.

tighten it just to the point where it tensions and then back off a touch. with the firewall adjusters you should be able to pull the housing about 1/8" from the adjuster. what that equates to on an adjustable cable i'm not sure. as long as you can wiggle the fork a touch you should be good.
basically you want just enough slack so the TO bearing doesn't have pressure on it. if it does it will wear prematurely and can cause the clutch to drag also causing pre mature wear.

I started with 1" free play at the pedal, But it was a little hard to get it out of 1st.to 2nd. ended up with a 1/2" now it's fine. like said you don't want the throw out bearing riding the plate.

adjust up at the plate like described.
up at the pedal, adjust so that as you release the clutch, it grabs approx 1/2 way up.
Like mentioned,, you dont want the throw out bearing buzzing the plate all the time.
from this point, depending on how long your legs are,, where you like your seat, and simply the feel of it, you can fine tune on either end to suit you.
I would typically expect a clutch to grab anywhere from 3/8ths to 1/2 on the release stroke.
if you think you would like to feather the clutch more often and you find having your heel on the floor at the same time might help for comfort and quicker response, set the cable to enguage a little sooner like 1/4 the way up on the pedal.
The halfway point is always a good and average ballpark location for most sticks manual or slave types.
I appreciate the help.I was going to adjust it yesterday,and it started raining,now,we went from 84 degrees yesterday to 47 today.Crazy.I figured that would happen,I'm off this week,so,cold and rain are a must.Jeez.
I'm assuming your using an other and factory cable! Most of the factory ones in the Birds & cougars are self adjusting. To adjust it or release it pull op on the clutch pedal. Now if you have a manual cable or aftermarket get to wrenchin
Yep,I have to do the wrenchin'.Mine is an aftermarket adjustable cable.It's been raining,so,the work is on temporary hold.My new shifter should be here tomorrow,so,after I install that,I'll adjust the cable......weather permitting.

The badge means nothing without a Hurst shifter in place.The Hurst pistol grip doesn't count.

Oh no,I took what you said as you meant it,no worries.I bought a shifter.On the way home (minutes ago),the shifter ball (the part that fits into the little cup in the tranny) jumped out.No shifty shifty.Luckily I had the Ripper that I just sold and threw it on to get me home.The new one should be here tomorrow.Man,I'm glad I cut that hole just a little larger in the floor to swap the shifter out.Perfect timing.Anyway,the Sport is fine and waiting for the new buillet piece.Aaaaah,happy ending.

it was lucky I hadn't dropped by the UPS Store yet.Otherwise,I would've been messed up.Also,like I said,lucky I cut that hole in the floor yesterday.That made the job wicked fast......minutes.Tomorrow I should have everything buttoned up and good to go.I am now to a point I can start gathering funds to get the new control arms for the rear.I've got to start selling some parts soon.
