Title: Transmission question
Post by: atariman on March 06, 2009, 08:39:57 PM
When did Ford put electronic shifting in the AOD transmission?  None of my books specify when this happened. Maybe they always did and I am just retarded. Can anyone help?

The electronic versions were termed AOD-E
The AOD-E later evolved into the 4R series....

Regular AOD's were found until 1993 in Mustangs and Broncos.

AODE's were sort of phased in... I believe Lincolns possibly got them in '91... In the Crown Vic & Grand Marquis cars built after 2/18/92 have them... I had a early '92(Aug '91) with the AOD... Advance didn't list the AOD in a '92 CV or GM, had to buy a filter kit for a '91 to get what I needed...

I dunno when they were first used in T-bird & Cougs, Possibly in '94 when they went with the 4.6, don't keep up with the later models... Happiest moment in ownership of my '95 LX, was the day it drove away with someone else's name on the title... Actually that's a lie, but it sounds good LOL...

Most enjoyable time was when I chased a local guy in a Sable down the mountain near Monterey VA... It had a set of Eibach springs and 275/45/17 Mitchelin's and was a blast to run through the twisties... He'd run the inside in the hairpins, but I could have easily passed him on the outside, didn't want to pinch him in the oncoming lane if we met someone...

MN12's used the AOD up till 1993.  In 1994, they switched to the 4R70W, so no AODE's for us.
