You'd have been better off smashing one of the door windows.  They're easier to find AND reinstall...

Are you saying you broke a window out before trying to unlock the passenger side door?
They probably knocked the linkage off with the slim jim.

OK, here's how it works (and I'm doing this without the benefit of a photo, so bear with me).

The plastic clips essentially mate the rod with the latch assembly, and prevent the rods from wiggling out (and also will quiet them down a bit, so there's no metal-on-metal clanging). It's not a perfect system, but it is still used today by Ford in some capacity.

The clips are meant to push into their slots on the latch assembly, and only one way. In other words, they're not supposed to come back out without breaking. If you're careful you can get one out intact, though.

The rod then slides into the clip. The clips sometimes have an "arm" that slides back over the rod, to keep it in line and prevent it from backing out.

Is it possible for a clip to break? Heavens yes.
Can a rod come loose from a clip? Sure.

Even still, the latch is designed to work without the aid of a power lock solenoid so the mechanism (if it's not frozen up) can still do its job, provided everything is in place.

If the power door lock solenoid dies, or is dying, it will put drag on the latch. Sometimes it prevents the door lock from popping up with the pull of the interior handles. That may be what's happening here.

With the solenoid not attached to the latch mechanism, the door latch should work freely. But if the solenoid is completely free of the latch mechanism and the door still won't open, it's possible that another rod came off somewhere, or the latch is so gunked up with dirt that it won't work without the assistance power lock solenoid. In other words, you need to clean out and lube the mechanism a bit more often. ;)

You can try pulling on the inner door handle to see if the lock rod goes up, and therefore opens the door. That's usually my first suggestion. But I think softtouch is right, something likely got bumped off the latch assembly with the slim-jim attempt.

i have the clip in front of me....its broken......and both of them broke with the slim jim attempt......i already have the window, all the rods are in place and everything works fine but i cant lock my doors and get back into the car...... that one yellow clip on the back of the lock is boke, so the rod that goes from the lock to the latch is not functional........so using my key to get in the car is useless, so in all reality i need locks???? or try to get some off another car in one piece?.........And how is a door window easier to replace........ five bolts and 5 minutes later the whole quarter window assembly, comes out, to reinstall you put some more adhesive on it bolt it in straight, and your off.....Thanks again guys, im off to the jy again to see if i can get these clips off.....

So what you're saying is...

- Clips are broken
- Power door lock solenoid is not attached to the latch mechanism
- Door lock cylinder rod is not attached to the latch mechanism
- Interior door lock rod is not attached to the latch mechanism

Is that correct? If so...you have no way to get into that door with a key, nor with electrical power to the solenoid. That pretty much leaves just the interior door handle that can open the door. If you unbend a wire hanger and hook it over the handle, then pull towards you, it should get your door opened up.

The way the mechanism is designed, the rod from the interior door handle to the latch is the most secure. In fact, it's a real beotch to deal with. It just can't accidentally slip off. It can bend like hell, sure, but it won't slip out. So we can safely say that that particular rod IS still attached and should open the door if it's pulled (and nothing else is jamming up the attempt inside the door, like a loose rod).

Everything is hooked up correctly except the rod that connnects the door lock to the latch mechanism, it did fall out at latch but i got it back in.the only issue i have is that one clip that ties the lock to the rod...The outer door handles still work and if i manually push the lock closed (at the indicator), it will lock, but the only way it will unlock is by pulling the inside door handle, the lock does not work......i saw two guys parting out there cars on here so i left a couple quik posts... hope this turns out ok...

Ok the key cylinder rod is disconnected from the latch assembly because the plstic clip/lever is broken. Do i need new locks, im guessing yes because the only ones close to me i tried getting off and broke....plus i was iffy on using the worn jy ones....now off to find new ones...thanks a bunch everyone..P.S. (i wish there was a little acess panel on the inner doorjamb of the door, so i could actually see the lock and tabs that hold it in place)...maybe im not looking from the right direction........i hate this cold weather

Eh idk, id have to do some modifying to make them work... the piece that i pulled out looked like a bottle opener, with a hole for the rod to go through... thats creative though.....

The way we always did it was with a triangular piece of wood and a long rod you'd use to unlock the door. Push the wood piece into the top of the door to pull it open a bit and use the rod to unlock and EUREKA! You've got it!!

my arms are long enough to reach through the quarter window. I have to do the same thing before too long. My power lock didn't work, so I ripped into it while I had the door pulled apart, and the door lock isn't even mounted to the door. I hate this kind of .
