Title: Weird whining sound
Post by: turbocoupetgill on March 02, 2009, 07:08:24 PM
I just had a shop install a racerwalsh cam in my 88 TC. Well when i started it up after i got it from the shop it was making this weird whining noise. I dont know if its just not completely broken in or the shop just not doing something right on the install?

Anything well be apreciated

You need to determine where the whining noise is coming from, then go from there.  What exactly did they do/replace?

it seems to be coming from under the valve cover. They installed a cam(.415 lift) Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor valve cover gasket and timing belt.

Is the new cam a roller or a traditional flat tappet? Did they break the cam in for you?  I would think they would. A flat tappet cam usually makes tapping and ticking noises when it's going south. Could possibly be the new timing belt. The square tooth belts the TC's used do tend to make a small amount of noise.  Check your oil for metal.

its a flat tappet. he said he just took it for a test drive so im not sure if he actually broke it in. just incase i kept it at 2000-2500 while driving for about 20 miles. im hoping its new timing belt because it didnt do it before i changed it. and i will check my oil. would that mean the cam is toasted?

sounds like the timing belt to me.  roll it back to the shop and ask the guys to listen and suggest a deal. The noise should be closer to the front if it is the belt.

you never know, there might be a problem with the tension pully, perhaps its not installed just perfect and is rubbing the cover somewhere.  Take the cover off and retest.

First, take the belts off the front of the engine and run it. It could be an alternator, a PS pump (Ford pumps are notoriously loud, especially if a bit of air gets into the fluid), or an A/C compressor.

Do you have an automotive stethoscope? If not you can improvise one by using a long stick or socket extension. Stick one end in your ear and the other end on whatever you think may be making the noise (don't touch it to moving parts, for God's sake - you'll deafen yourself!).

alright thanks. I will take it back to the shop tommorow and have them check it out. i have listened and am almost positive its the belt. I don think it can be the a/c because i dont have it hooked up. im hoping theyll fix it for free cuz they didnt do it right the first time but well find out.
