Question: side exit tips
I am thinking about machining a pair of these.............opinions please (good or bad).
i think they look great. almost factory to each his own i say go for it
Got a diff view?
I put that one on with MS Paint,so no,I dont have another view.
As a kid, I had a model car that had the fender cut away a bit to clear those just behind the front fenderwell. I plan on photoshopping that with my car. But to have them come out back there looks good too.
Zoomies FTW
This ain't the model, but it's similar.
Is this an homage to the Mad Max Pursuit Special?
ok,I think I like this much better..................yes/no? this would also be easier to machine.
does it really look that bad? :D
i like the second one, i say go for it
Hard to tell, but yes. A single pipe could look pretty good, depending on execution.
I think either would be good
if you want to keep lers on it you have to put a couple of tight 90 bends. It would be for austhetics only.
I like the side pipes V8demon posted on a new pony recently.
ill hunt up the thread.
The second looks better. If the tips are somewhat rectangle, like the Nascar type exhaust, that would look great, and not out past the body much.My buddy just had some stainless tips made for his '67 Stang, and used lers from Spintech. The inlet and outlet are on the same side of the ler like the old AAR Cuda and T/A Challenger. It made using side exhaust a LOT easier, and, they sound REALLY angry......which is a good thing.Tips on each side.It should look symmetrical.
I like the second one. would it be possible to do that with a rolled lip?
It wouldnt be rolled,I would machine a radius all the way around the inner and outer lip.
Been there, done that, got rid of it and glad I did...
Not necessarily true. Less pipe = less weight, less pipe = shorter path for exhaust to exit pipe = more power.
There is such a thing as too short a pipe when it comes to that....It can change how the exhaust gases will see the outside atmosphere and change exhaust velocity (in a good way OR a bad way depending on other factors as well).
An OUTSTANDING read on the subject: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/hardcore/0505em_exh/index.html
Anyway, I believe the pic Scott referred to is this one:

I don't think the weight difference would be enough to make any kind of difference in performance, and I bet the dyno wouldn't see any difference either.
The only person I know here counting calories like I am is Gumby, so weight probably isn't an issue with the OP.
As for power, that's another story. Way back in the day, a mag did a dyno test of the Borla system for TCs. The gain was a measly 5HP for the 87-88, but something like 35HP for the 83-84s. Just get under there and take a look at how that pipe goes over the axle. YUCK.
Borla did two things. One was the ler. The second was to really smooth out the pipe flow over the axle.
So replacing the factory path with a shorter, smooth pipe out the side, that's a win-win on power and weight (depending on execution).
I am going Esclade/Denali tips on my side exits. Until I do my final set up which is a surprise
True, the tail pipes that came on these cars are truly lacking.I bought mandrell bent tails for a Stang (2 1/2 inch),and the tips (which everyone has sen),and that REALLY smoothed out the flow.I have 40 series Flowmasters on the Sport right now.I wish I would've kept the Warlocks on,though. If you get the right tips,it may look really good out the side.
Why are you machining these tips? I'd weld them out of stainless. Thats just my ten cents. I like the second one better.
I can machine them easier than I could fabricate them.I would hate to see how they would turn out,if I attemted to fabricate them.
there is also a issue with the frame being in the way.I need to figure out how I am going to get them to tuck up close to the rocker panle.
I am running bbk hedders, summit h-pipe,thrush glass packs and 90 degree pipes out the side rite now.all I need to do is make these and bolt them on.(poor mans exhaust system)
Well I'm curious to see how they'd come out if you machined them. Go for it!
From what I have seen the pipes usually have a notch pressed or beat into them to clear. Look on CoolCats on the build up of Erics vert. I think there are some pics there of routing.

Hiding all of the pipe is going to be hard without skirts
