Title: Rear Window
Post by: CootersXR7 on February 24, 2009, 12:32:32 PM
My Turbo Coupe Parts Car has a defroster built into the rear window. I would like to pull this glass and put in my 1985 TC. Does anyone have any experience they would share with replacing rear glass on Turbo Coupes?

Thanks,

Cooter

Perhaps you went from my name straight to my post.... and took the 7 from XR7 for a ride adding it to parts car and came up with 87 parts car?

My parts car is a 1986, I am quite partial to the 4-eyes... So anyone pulled the rear glass before? I suppose I will just try and pull it from the parts car using fishing line to saw the adhesive. If it seems straight-forward I will attempt to swap the glass onto the runner. Thanks guys,

It would be worth your time to have a real glass installer handle the install at the very least.
Even if you pull the old one yourself (which can be more difficult than you think), they will install it for you.
I did that on the '80 XR-7.  The old windshield was loose anyway from a prior hack-job install (which contributed to rust and water in the interior) so I VERY CAREFULLY took it out and set it aside while I took care of the rust issue. I wasn't about to mess with the install though and was very pleased with the results.
I'd pull the parts car in a heated garage or wait for it to warm up though.  It will be a bitch to get it out of there when the adhesive is cold and hard.
Try and take the one from the parts car out before you mess with the other though...just in case you break it removing it ;)

Amen tot hat chuck, tried pullng a windsheild in 38degree weather.......not so fun, the adhesive just bonds back together around the line and hardens up like a brick.......

I also suggest getting it done. It's just not worth the aggravation to do it unless that's your profession.

Sorry, this thread slipped away from me... Thanks for the replies. I will definitely have the install done professionally if I decided to do it.

Now to change the thread a little. My '85 has the connector under the dash (I was playing with heater cores and blowers) to plug into a transplanted HVAC Control Unit with Rear Defrost, but I wonder if the IP Harness is the only area that Defrost Wires remained even on a non-rear-defrost vehicle. The wires going back to the glass are not present, next is to see if the fusible link exists up front.

Anyways, please reply if you think there may be other items I have overlooked before I decide to swap the defroster glass in (now that winter is almost over)?

Thanks,
