Title: shifter for an 86 bird?
Post by: shameless on February 23, 2009, 10:48:13 AM
I'm thinking about putting a shifter in my ,86.  my question is, do most shifters fit under the console without cutting the console?  I'd love to leave most of the apearance stock and still have a performance shifter.  but I want to make sure its one with a locking shifter as well, its an auto, and thats a safety feature I will not bypass, I've seen friends do it, and I've also seen some very close calls when their tranny's got bumped out of park  and started rolling away. lol

Maybe a B&M Hammer shifter would work. You may be able to install it without too many mods to the console,if any.The one for a Mustang is your best bet I'd think.Anything can be done, but it depends on how far you're willing to go.To keep it mostly stock, the best bet would be to buy a factory shifter setup and install it.Here's the Hammer shifter...

Like Vinnie said, the Mustang one would fit the best. I had one in both my old '87XR7, and '87LS. One thing though, the Mustang console one is a full ratchet shifter. :burnout:
