Parts
-Best place is here. No lie. What emblems do you need? If I find any Ill grab them for you. If I was in your situation with an American car over there would buy the parts car and strip it down of EVERYTHING. That way it wont be as hard to get parts.
-There is little aftermarket support (any place to buy parts) for our cars.
Agreed. I used to see them up here on a regular basis until about 3 or 4 years ago....
Now I see the same 5 or 6 over and over with the very rare unknown car maybe 3 times a year...
Welcome aboard,,, best place on the net !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to the forum we enjoy anyone from anywhere as long as you have a cougar thunderbird or similar.
Welcome aboard buddy you found the right and best place for parts and help, even here in America these cars are Endangered Species. Most guys here have parts laying around or know of a part there willing to part with, so good luck.
And what motor is it 3.8 or 5.0 you didn’t state.
Welcome aboard. Just so you know an xr7 only came with a 5.0L.
Not in '88. Nice car, good to another one across the pond; welcome!
Nice to see another 88 Cougar XR-7. I've never seen one with the smaller 3.8L & I didn't know you could get an XR-7 with a 3.8L. You'll find about any part you need for it here or on Ebay. I have JL speakers all around & 2 JL 12" W7's with a Kicker amp pushing them in the trunk. I decided to go with JL since they won the world championship sub competion a year or so ago. Good Luck with your project!
Sorry to tell you this, but by looking at your pictures closer. I can tell it's not an original XR-7 because of the chrome moulding in the center of the tail lights & the trim around the windows. XR-7 is basically the sport model of the cougar. All of the mouldings & trim are color matched to the car's paint, accept for the black moulding around the windows. Kind of like the Dodge Ram Sport pickup. The only chrome pieces on a XR-7 are the 3 Cougar emblems. The grill & one on each side of the upper quarter panel.
Hi there and welcome to the board.
It is not a problem being a true xr7 or not. If it is not an xr7, it will be an LS model.
Post up your VIN number.
Do you know if it has two or six injectors? The reason i say this is because it will tell us exactly what year it is if the motor is original.
Welcome to the board and make sure you shop for parts here. We all have a decent pile of parts.
Another way to tell is if it has EFI or throttle body injection. Since 1988 was the first year for EFI on a 5.0L
86 had throttle body injection. True Electronic Fuel injection didn't come on the Cougar until 88. I was with my parents when they were looking at Cougar's & Thunderbirds in 86 & that's one reason why they waited until late 1987 to order the XR-7 Cougar
86 on 5.0
Sitting right outside.:burnout:
Coolcats-

The 5.0 V8 received the new sequential electronic fuel injection (SEFI) adopted from the Mustang. The roller lifters were a running addition, making this the debut year for the Cougar roller block. The new parts and fuel injection resulted in an additional 30 hp, now up to 150, and greatly improved torque output. The Cougar/Thunderbird cam was ground for torque output at lower rpms---perfect for towing. Unfortunately, the Cougar/Thunderbird did not receive the same High Output (200 hp) treatment as the 1986 Mustang, nor did it get the performance dual exhaust. But at least the 5.0 became more modern.
X2 It was '86 for 5.0. :burnout:
I wouldn't worry if it was a real XR-7 or not. Just finding a cougar over there is worth the find.
Mines an LS, but it'll have almost the same stuff an XR-7 has when I'm done. It doesn't bother me a bit. I may make a LS-7 badge for it when I'm done. :D
That would be pretty cool. I was going to slap 88Cougar for a second there. I have an 86 Cougar 5.0 and I was like "I know he is wrong! This thing is entirely stock or a complete freak from the factory."
Then people will think its GM powered.
good point
I've been thinking about making Jerry a special "HeliArc Edition" badge for his trunklid.
Hey, it's better than the "Fortified by Pickel-X Edition" badge I'd originally thought up...
Oh, erm, sorry for the hijack. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.
(Cat looks GREAT, by the way!)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!! Nice one.
And yea Wesley your cougar looks GREAT. The gold works.
All I was going by is what my Dad was told at the Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Dealership in 1986 & what a brochures said. Sorry, I've never seen a 86 cougar & I was told they were Throttle Body fuel injected or something like that or not true Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). I did a little history reading on the Cougar about when it first came out in 1967. & something I don't understand is why did the 427 engine put out 390hp, & the 428 only had 335hp & in 1971 the 429 Super Cobra jet had 370hp. I don't understand why Ford built bigger engines with less horsepower. I guess maybe for more Torque.
Smog rules started getting a little tougher to make lots of horsepower and as time went by insurance started catching on to the horsepower game so....... The rest is history.
Insurance rates also, from what I hear a lot of cars were rated lower under the actual output.
Mainly because the big 3 would make a car with say "370 HP" and it would actually be around "400 HP" which made the insurance rates lower. Eventually they started catching on and sooner or later that practice stopped. Not to mention when the 70's came around and there was the oil crisis little cars became the trend and big v8 horsepower wasn't really needed anymore. So that is the story of the death of the muscle car.
