Title: speedo gear replacement
Post by: mcb82gt on February 12, 2009, 08:37:38 AM
Ive got the full digital cluster and AOD tranny.

Eventually I will swap gears in the reareand, is there anything special with the getting speedo gear swapped to make it read correctly with the digital dash?  Ive only done it on 5spd cars buttstuffog dashes.

Disconnect Plug, Remove bolt, Pull sender, Remove Pin, Swap Gear, then reinstall Pin, Sender, Bolt, and Plug.

I know that some AODs have different # of teeth on the output shaft, that would be the only thing to look out for I think.

So if I find the donor Cougar with 3.27, I should take the gear with the ring and pinion.

I think I read, not sure of year, some AOD V6  with the 7.5 rear, could have 3.27.

Any input?

For an 8.8:
327s can be had from AOD Supercoupes.
308s from V8 MN12 Birds

For a 7.5:
I think the 273 was the most common in the fox.

Rangers and Aerostars also go 7.5s and would probably have steeper gears.  Check the Tag.

My 273s with my T5 has some punch.  But i haven't had it on the freeway yet.

Is there a trac-loc from a junkyard vehicle that will swap in?

Or look for older rangers or even fox birds and cats.It would be hit and miss till you find one.

If you run a 3.73 with your stock AOD (8 tooth drive gear) you need a 23 tooth driven gear to make the speedo correct. Mustangs Unlimited sells one for automatic transmission cars.

I went to the local PnP this weekend.  I found no less than 5 Aerostars with 373s and at least 1 was a locker.
