Title: turbo coupe to v-8 Gauge cluster swap?
Post by: shameless on February 11, 2009, 01:22:53 AM
ok so my T-bird still has the original turbo coupe gauges in it.  with that v-8 in it now, should all of my gauges but the tach and boost work still?  if so, I can buy an external tach and mount it somewhere. lol  I realy hope I dont have to spend the extra money for all those gauges. lol

If it's the T/C dash only the Tach and Boost Gauge will not work. If you buy a blower the boost gauge will work again and the tach from a T-Bird Sport will fix your tach blues.

The tach can be converted to from a 4 cylinder to an 8 cylinder.  Go to CoolCats.net.  In the tech section will be specific directions on how to change it.  It's pretty simple, just adding a resistor.

The Sport Tachs have a V8 tach, but they only go to 6,000.  That may or may not be a problem for you.  The 4 cylinder tach face is to 7,000, though you may need to work with the needle placement to insure accuaracy.

Your TC is an '86, isn't it? The '86 tach cannot be modified. You'll need either an '88 Sport/XR7 V8 tach or an 87/88 Turbo Coupe tach that you can modify.

is it possible to take the tach out of one cluster, and put it in mine?  so I can leave the boost in it? or does someone make a whole replacement for my bird? lol  I'd love to keep the whole thing looking stock, (sleeper)  and if I can leave the factory looking tach in and still have my boost for when I finaly get around to putting in a supercharger, I'd like to.  also, does anybody know where I can find a decent shifter for an auto trans?  I bought one from autozone, but it didnt fit.  OR, does B&M or someone like them, make a replacement shifter, like a ratchet or slap shifter that is meant to replace the factory one?

Pick up an 87/88 Turbo Coupe cluster (they seem to be relatively available on E-Bay), pull the tach, do the conversion, swap it into your cluster or use the cluster you bought.  The clusters come apart pretty easy.  Swaping guages is simple.  Or swap in a V8 tach.  They are harder to find.
