Well many of you knew that I had a severe rot problem with this car, but I guess I didn't even know how bad it was. I repaired it as best I could for a quick fix to get a couple more months out of it... quick being about 8 hours worth of work. This is the passenger side strut tower.
Here's a video of the flexing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6SUv2HgE4Y

WOW...
How is everything else though? Like the underside. With your skills I bet yo could clip the front end. I dont know what it would end up costing vs replacing it with a solid car though.
Are you going to get another or are you leaving us?
Off topic but how do you like the shaved handles? ever have any issues?
Holy ! That video is frightening!
It's official. Crystal needs us all to keep our eyes out for a nice '87-'88 replacement. :hick:
Wow...I'm surprised it was still even in one piece.
What are your plans?
Is the other side as bad too?
All I could find is the other side. Dont know if you need it but here it is

If this was my car I would just cut the old frame rail out and make a new one. Its not that hard to do. Here is some pics that might help give you an idea.

Cut out the old frame rail and make a new one from 4 pieces of flat stock welded together.

Weld them together and in place.

Make a reinforcement at the back of the frame rail for added strength. Drill holes for the bolts that hold the k member on.
If you need anymore pics. Just ask i have more. This was done on a mustang but its pretty much the same.
If you were still in Ohio I would sell you a good solid base for dirt cheap. The body aint perfect but all the important bits are rust free. Of course its 3.8 and the interior is absolutly shot lol.
Wow, that's bad. My parts TC flexed when you put your knee on the bumper, but it wasn't that bad...
Is that the car you repaired a whole lot of rust on a few years ago? How are those repairs holding up? That'd be a big factor in whether you repair it or not...
Just wondering why you used flat stock? Seems like a lot of work and welding?
We were cheap and thats all we had laying around. :hick:
well, if you happen to be in the market for another bird' i know of a pretty darn nice 83 turbo coupe for sale locally. don't know what our plans are but its definitely worth looking at.
I was actually thinking I wanted another 4 eyed bird as a replacement, hit me up with more info on that 83 :)
This is my first car and I'm still driving it 8 years later which is impressive enough as it is. I'd love to fix it but it's been neverending rot issues since I bought it.
I appreciate the how to on the repair, but it's nothing I've never done before, it's simply a matter of practicality. I just patched in what I had to in order to keep it roadworthy. A pretty repair it's not, but it's plenty practical.
I have my ranchero in a mid resto and I also have my prefect to build. The turbo coupe will be an easy project too. With all those to work on
i don't know if this helps but i have the strut towers from Kmember i pick up. they cut just past the brake line to about 2 INCH past the strut tower;
i'm doing a straight-6 to V8 K member swap on my 1982 yellow stangcoupe.
so i don't need the frame/strut tower parts. here photos.as you see rust free.

it was too dark by the time i got by there today but ill get some pics!
car looks great from the outside, nice on the inside but underneath has a little bit to be desired. same price on it for the last 6 months and i know for a fact he is into it for around 2. he either owns it outright or its on consignment. it was for sale locally for 2300 before it showed up here.

i'm so glad i don't live on the cape anymore, i really enjoy the rust free cars here in florida :D
is it me or what?
i have notest that cars with good paint are all rusted out on the underside but the rust free car have paint that shot?
CHUCK! I'm starting to think I need to paint my TC black. Eventually I will paint it the pastel desert sand but the factory paint is 400 a gallon. :(
Will you hate me?
Yep. this car is one of 2 (the dark blue turbo coupe for sale on here) that i was considering before buying the silver mustang to replace the red one.
that is a nice '83 TC...5 spd too.
$400/gallon!?!?! (honestly I don't know if that is outrageous or not :p)
My opinion is that color is part of that car's appeal...It was one of the main reasons I bought it...it was unique. BUT, it's not my car any more. :toilet:
Okay, I think I'm over the black TC thing. I agree with you on the appeal of the gold.
I must be the exception, My paint was still fairly good (w/ a few ses and dings) but still had it almost perfect underneath too. Picked mine up in harrisburg, pa though:D
The paint and underside of mine was pretty bad but when you buy 2 Cougars for $150 what do you expect? What I wasn't expecting to find was the 85 XR7 had only 86K miles.
I've noticed that at times. I think the southern sun bakes them more than the north salt festival.
That's a sharp looking car but I'm very leary of things that've been painted... too many bad experiences with body work. I'd rather find something solid with a billion miles that needs some paint and a drivetrain...
don't blame you. it caught my eye and figured id throw it your way. i will keep an eye out.
go beat em' up...

5 year/100,000 mile warranty?
Wow, Alot of the inside of that car is TRASHED!! Rest of it looks pretty decent though.
2 grand.... with almost 200k on it? Yeah seriously go slap them around.
its a used car dealer. if they put more than one dollar in it they effe'd up. its getting harder and harder to find tbirds worth hanging on to around here. not to mention half the users on this site are driving worse off cars.
Looks alright but i'd push the guy down a flight of stairs and tell him to lower the price or else.
I haven't met a car dealer yet that wouldn't lower the price of a car.
X2, When I got my '94 bird, the dealer wanted 2500, but after
reminding him that the tires were bald and the suspension needed a little work, got it for 1950 :shakeass:
a 5 year 100k mile warranty would be sweet for 2k. I feel i wouldn't try to haggle with him too much about it. Just me. Thats buying a used car, with a new car warranty. Anything ever happens, you bring it back... which it would. lol
LOL @ 5 year 100k mile warranty. C'mon now.....
A regular, non fox lover would murder that car in about 6 months.....
This is usually the fate of most Fox's owned by non-Fox people.
 Yea, found that out pretty quick when I bought my most recent....
AZ here, even rusty state cars come here and live forever.
These cars are rapidly moving into the "Beggars can't be choosers" realm. They are finally starting to appreciate in value. In other words, they're getting to the point that if you want one you'll pay what the seller wants or you'll go without. If the body of that car is solid it's well worth $2k in MA. It's not like you can find dozens of 'em in the classifieds every week, especially in rust-pr0ne areas. Anybody who has actually looked for one can verify how hard they are to find now. It took me five years to find my car six years ago, and I settled - I really wanted a four-eye 'Bird or 87-88 Cat, but jumped on this car because it was mint with only 47k miles.
I want an 87-88 Cat so bad but being broke hurts.
yeah unless someone who is selling doesnt know what they have, they arent cheap, i saw a guy trying to sell a sport with 125k on it for $1800, And my girls car was only $600. My car was $2500 7 years ago in mint shape, with 60k on it. Man i wish my parents took care of their cars........ i always seee an xr7 just like mine, and ive left notes on the guys window, but they never reply,..... next time ill just leave the site info!!!!
The reason they usually go so cheap is because people typically buy them to tear them down. To a Mustang guy, they're only worth the used parts they can pull from them before sping the rest. For those of us who want to keep them, they're worth a lot more. I'd pay $2k for that in a heartbeat, if I was looking to replace mine.
And that is the sad truth. Old Raven hit the nail on the head. Its really a shame.
Wanna talk about crazy prices for a 20ish year old car. Look at this at a Ford dealer near me: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=255209400&dealer_id=84108&car_year=1988&rdm=1237565728976&model=MUST&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1987&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&engine=8+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=25&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&showZipError=n&make=FORD&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=d&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=60638&advanced=y&end_year=1993&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=5&standard=false
crystal...... if you decide to junk, sell or partt your car, id be interested in alot~!!!!!! but i dont know how attached you are.... just throwing it out there.....
Yikes, that sounds like a guy that sells classic cars by me, he's a stinking crook. He'd sell you the shirt off your back and sell ice to an eskimo. Saw him try to sell a car with a giant bondo patch on the door for 8K! http://www.coyoteclassics.com
I'll probably end up keeping most of my car that's worth salvaging when I tear it apart. Drivetrain is staying with me, fenders are good, doors are probably going on my tc cuz the bottoms on the tc are junk, interior is all custom done. Basically what I think will happen is anything good will go in to my tc which isn't in too bad shape, including the 5.0 drivetrain, and my tc drivetrain will probably get stuffed in a corner and shuffled in to a T or something. I wouldn't expect to never have another fox car, but I really want a 4 eye and would rather wait till I have my own garage and pay to get a nice one from another part of the country.
Take a look out here in AZ, plenty of rustless 80's rides rolling around.
