Dude that's just a dumb statement AND you spelled it wrong(Hussein). I'm no Democrat but if the guy can energize the country like Reagan or Kennedy then good on him. We need a pick-me-up here.

I'm not watching it, but I can hear 2 or 3 others in the office who are.
I have no feelings one way or another about the guy, he's a politician. At least he's not W.
My only beef is "technically" he's the first minority president. He's just as "white" as he is "black". Honestly is a good representation of what America is actually.

Yup to be honest I can say that Actions are what speak the loudest. Yes bush did some good things and some bad things does that mean I have to like him? No it does not. Do I have any actions with Obama as president to look at nope I don't I do have other actions from him that I can use to get an Idea what he is gonna be like! The biggest part that gets to me is neither of them seem to be out for the PEOPLE! They all seem to be out for themselves or there group of people. So for now I will have to wait and see just how Obama is going to be, but my gut tells me we would be better off with a for the people president! Will that ever happen? Only if the people of the nation unite for the common good of all people. In this time with everyone focus on MONEY first and everything else in order after MONEY. With that mind set that will do this nation in! We need a serious reorganization of the values of this nation. I truly think that if the great fore fathers of this nation would be going crazy if they were here to see what we have done with our government! So I'll be watching with my cheeks puckered in case something happens.

Exactly. The importance of his being 'Black' (though not Black enough?) is that the racial divide is dwindling. So if that's the big deal, hopefully people realise that this means it's time to stop calling him a 'Black' President, and let him stand on his own merit. When people ignore his ethnicity, then he and ever other person fighting for civil rights has finally seen success.
I understand the excitement, and by all means celebrate, but the time will come to drop it. He's got to be a great President who happens to be black, not a black President. His colour should be an unimportant detail.

I think I'm gonna judge a man by his actions, rather than by his name.
The outgoing fella did some good, and some bad as well, but that's history now. It's up to the new guy to try to sort out this shiznit-pile of a mess he was left to inherit, and just because his name seems funny to you, just remember, we could all be walking around, saluting a swastika,, and referring to a king or dictator or some shiznit. Or being gassed or worse because of some small ethnic diversity. (and i'm not at all being judgemental, I'd be one of the first to get it myself.)
The man has a hell of a job ahead of him, personally, if he can do 1/10 of what he promised, we'll be 10 times better off than we were before. and to quote Forrest Gump: "That's all I have to say about that."

I think it's ridiculous that people are so effin happy we have a black president. If we really want to honor the man we honored yesterday, we shouldn't CARE what race Obama is/isn't. Not ONE person should have voted for/against him because of his color.
I just hope people aren't disappointed. I'm wondering if we'll actually see this radical chaaaaaange that's been parroted about endlessly throughout the whole campaign.
And, to be on topic, I'm with Innes 100% on his original post. Well said.

Anybody who can't see the significance of what happened today, and who would focus ONLY those who might have voted for him just because he is black is looking at today's historical event from a very narrow perspective. Perhaps it's generational as I suspect that people like me near 50 and older who have lived through the some of the darker times in our history might see today's events much differently.

Cougar5.0, I'm with the other guys. I think you're seeing a bigot where there isn't one.
BTW, concentrating on his colour is part of the problem. Getting angry about it is a bigger one. Divided is divided, no matter which side you stand on. Ignore the divide and you'll be one people. Pretty simple, really. Then you can get back to Left or Right nit-picking. ;)

I can't be that dismissive of the historical nature of this event. I didn't call or imply that anybody was a bigot, just the desire to ignore the significance of having a black President when even I remember having rocks thrown at my school bus as a child. Nevermind the different water fountains, schools, lynchings & complete lack of representation or even the right to vote in many cases IN MY LIFETIME!
Being dismissive of this history does not imply that someone is a bigot, but knowing the politics of those who are dismissing this historical event is notable IMO. I noted it thusly.

He's not "black"...he's mixed....
It is a big step that a minority president has been elected, I'm just so over the "race" card being played (from both sides).
Like I said, his mixed heritage fits better with the whole "change" thing than clinging to the fact that his father was black...

Oh and Cougar, I'm not quite as old as you, but just so you don't think I was raised in some monochromatic suburb or small town. I grew up up in the inner-city, was put on the busses when they decided to de-segregate the public schools, had to deal with threats of "race riots" in middle school(when I didn't see what the big deal was) , but I preferred integrated schools growing up (spent 1 year at an all-white HS...HATED IT) and still live in an inner-city neighborhood. Race to me makes no difference, and it bugs me when that's all some people seem to see.

Which water fountain would he have been directed to as a child?
His family could not even live in 16 states when he was young as interracial marriage was ILLEGAL in those states.
What do the majority of people in this country see him as?
The "mixed" moniker, while indeed true, does not acknowledge the reality of what the definition of "black" is in this country. I guarantee you that if he looked at a white woman in the wrong part of the South as a child they wouldn't have said "yes, but he's half white".

Same here - I grew up in the inner city of Boston (Roxbury) in a mixed neighborhood and my parents voluntarily bussed me to a black neighborhood so I would be more open minded.
It is because of my experiences as a child that I would be remiss if I were to simply try to dismiss the significance of this occasion. I cannot. This is the one of, if not the most significant event of my lifetime. And it is precicely because Barack Obama is black. I will not be dismissive of the significance of this event, even if some would like to pretend it's "just another President".

All that you say is true, but again we are dealing with the "now".
"Some men you just can't reach" (there will always be bigots, even in the 21st century)
Like I said I see things differently and never condoned or understood bigotry. (I've actually had "words" with a few rednecks on the matter) I understand the significance of what has happened.
It just seems very divisive to me and not so much a path to unity...

I'd say that over 50% of all the people here in my adopted 98% white state are bigots (and they really don't try that hard to hide that fact). I'm not going to dwell on this, but I think it is not divisive to point out the significance of where we were and where we're going. Ignore history I will not.

I formed this opinion over the past 20 years living and interacting with people here - none of this opinion has anything to do with the election. Heck, most all of the people I grew up with in the inner city were bigots - white and black and hispanic. Whites are far from the only bigots - some of the worst bigots I knew were NOT white!

I'm not saying you should dismiss it. I'm just saying that continuing to put the emphasis on his colour after the big celebration is over will just serve to point out the differences between people, not the similarities.
Like I said, celebrate today. I totally understand why it's a big deal to visual minorities for someone from a visual minority to get the top job in the Nation. The significance of the event marks the END of something. But it'll never end if people don't let it die.
I know it's vindicating for you, but making people feel like shiznit about a history they can't change (and had no involvement in) doesn't serve to bring people together. You should see how life is up here in Canada. We've spent the last three decades or more making apologies for the actions of our ancestors. For you, the actions happened within memory, but if you can't get past them in the coming months, when you have every opportunity and responsibility to, you'll end up spending another 50 years divided. Civil rights achieved, but no closer together. After all of this time, we still haven't managed to bring First Nations people together with the rest of Canada (though it's hard when the reservations still exist). The same goes with the French in this country. We spend so much time concentrating on what makes us different and blaming the British/Anglophoniqe for our problems that we continue to drive each other apart, and risk further isolation ever time the topic makes the headlines. Forever laying blame from one side, and forever gaining resentment on the other.
So celebrate the event, but try not to hold the cause to Obama for the next four to eight years. Move on and see your President for the man he is, not the man people see at first glance, because if you can only credit him as a Black President, you have to blame him as a Black President when he shags up. ;)

Oldraven,
Yep, celebrating a NEW BEGINNING is not, and never will be an assault on anybody.
It's not vindicating to me, it's a celebration of a new beginning for our nation. This seemed like an impossiblity to millions just 6 months ago. If people clebrating this incredible event only serves to make you want to be concerned about the feelings of those who want to forget or dismiss the past, then count me out. It's possible to celebrate without bad feelings - of which I have NONE. YOUR problem, NOT MINE.

IMO, there is nobody in the United States of America more responsible for getting Obama elected than GWB himself. Seriously, the first thing Obama should have done was thank Bush for making it possible. People just wanted him out so bad, and people viewed McCain as more of the same, dooming the republicans before they even had a nomination. A blindfolded chimp with a pencil in his teeth could've gotten elected as long as he represented something other than Bush & Co.
Not that I'm belittling Obama or his accomplishment. It is truly amazing that only a short time ago a woman caused a national uproar because she wanted to plant her arse on a bus, and now there is a black president (call him half black or half white if you will, but the public goes by appearance, not pedigree). For a minority race to go from not even being able to vote to actually running the place in less than a century is amazing.
No, I'm not belittling Obama, and my heart is actually gladdened that he's finally taken the reins. For better or for worse, history was made today. I'm simply saying that had the majority of the people been happy with the last 8 years they'd have sworn in another Republican today, black or white.

Wait a minute. The same person that was just going on about bigots has just made a bigoted statement against Canadians himself? A reminder: Brits invented English, so I rather think they know how to spell it. Another reminder: Two out of the three admins on this board spell it that way. Like it or not, America has shoved its beliefs, ideals, and culture down the throats of everyone on Earth. This inaugeration affects everybody.

Excellent post. Bush indeed was the number one reason that this event has occured. There was a time when the majority of blacks were supporting Hillary because they were sure that the US would never elect a black man. Bush's complete implosion allowed a window for Obama to make his move. Of course, the fact that he's one of the great orators of our time didn't hurt either :D
I probably should have put a wink or other indication that I was ribbing oldraven about his Candianess. I love Candians - always a hoot to discuss politics with as the perspective is different and "fresh".

I'm talking about the fact that I never said you don't deserve to celebrate. The New Beginning won't get anywhere if people can't eventually get past what they left behind.
Your second sentence proves my point. That's just great fellowship there. :wtf: Being a Canadian, I do have some insight into issues of dragging up the past and keeping a wall between people that should be coming together.
Anyway, I'm just as happy to acknowledge the symbolism of your President being a Black man. It does usher in a new age. I just hope it has a chance to work.

I was taking the whole message of your post, not just one sentence. I realize that you were OK with the celebration.
Read my above post - I was ribbing you and I enjoy the perspective of Candians.
I have no idea where this is going - one good reason to celebrate the moment. If history is any indication, the moment will not last for long.

I think its a sad day for our country because of it.
Wow. All I can say is WOW!
LOL, WHY? No way, no how, not in a million years would he have been nominated if he had a name more like "Bill Smith" and was white and everything else was exactly the same. Its the fact that he is black that got him noticed and as stated before, everybody was in such a panic to get rid of "W" in favor of something different. It sure as hell wasnt his experience, credentials, policies etc. that got him elected. The media pumped him up and its the media that got him elected. I believe we will get out chance, but its not going the be the change people are expecting or hoping for. lucky for him, times suck right now so any improvement will without a doubt be accredited to him. The Obama craze is a form of mental illness imo. Heck, he has all ready been back pedaling so dont hold your breath for too long on this one.

Probably the biggest reason I dislike the duo is because of a speech Bush made shortly after the Coalition of the Willing was formed. He stood at the mike and named each and every ally the US had, and then proceeded to say something to the affect of "If you're not with us, you're against us." When the US and Canada list their allies, they typically name one another first. Canada was nowhere on that list. Why? Because we refused to invade a Sovereign nation, and chose to honour the UN's resolution to stay out of Iraq (a separate war that the B/C administration successfully convinced the world was one in the same with the retaliation to 9/11). Shortly after people in the States started eating some foolish thing called Freedom Bacon. All the while, Canadians stood side by side with US troops in Afghanistan, taking 'friendly fire' (the most disgusting term ever crafted) that went, at the time, unpunished, and continue to this day to have themselves blown up by roadside bombs.
We went to support the USA, and their leader stood in front of you all and called us, essentially, the enemy. Now we're involved in an impossible war with an 'ism'. Because of that Canada will, for the first time in its history, lose a war, because you can't defeat a concept.
That's all I need to dislike the guys.

OMG, I remember that. There were dozens of these episodes where Bush & Cheney acted like arrogant spoiled infants. Never mind the outing of a CIA agent and deliberate forging of evidence to get us into a war.

Seventy-three percent say they disapprove of the way Mr. Bush has handled his job as president over the last eight years.

Being from his home state there are a few thing most probably haven't heard.
Did you know that he voted "present" 90% of the time. Not yes or no. Just that he was there. Now from my point there was and is no way to make an educated decision on if he is going to be a good president.
As for him being a public speaker. If he has a written out speech is is a great speaker. Just don't put him on the spot. That's when he has problems.
I will be honest about it I did not vote for him because there were a lot of holes that we didn't have answers for.

Hillary would have won if she was nominated - I can see you whining "oh, people only voted for her because she's a woman!"

no man, McCain beat McCain. He made himself look stupid. Obama had nothing to do with it and in no way was a "better man". He was awful as well and has no business representing the republicans. they might as well have went un represented. Nobody can say for sure if Hillary would have won. Sure their would have been people out there voting for her just cause she was a woman but no way in the #s like in Obamas case.
you can call me small minded all you want about my statements. It doesn't bother me as i know im correct. Obama did not win because he is a better politician.
why did you vote for him?

We all need to, first and foremost, agree to disagree. We still have the 1st amendment (for the time being), but that doesn't overrule personal responsibility. If you don't like him because of his race, good for you. It's America and, as long as you're not infringing on others' rights, more power to ya. I, personally, see him as just another corporate puppet with a bit more melanin content than the ones before since 1913, the beginning of the Federal Reserve, and the beginning of the gradual takeover of bankers and corporations taking over this once-free land. Guess who gets no-bid contracts in Iraq? Halliburton, which owns the subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown, & Root. Who is the former CEO of KBR? Dick Cheney! Shall I go on? Blackwater? Rupert Murdoch? Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda's ties to the CIA? The fact that our government has been training Georgians and supplying them with weapons? The fact that 3 towers fell on 9/11, not just 2? The fact that there was not enough wreckage at the Pentagon to possibly be passenger jet of that size? The fact that George W.'s cousin owns the security firm that was in charge of the twin towers? How about the massive "upgrades" done to the "internet cables" in the power-downs weeks before 9/11? The use of depleted uranium weapons in Iraq? I was there firsthand, so I can vouch for that personally. So, with Obama's flip-flopping on the policies that won him the popular vote, does anyone really believe in this "change" that he supposedly represents? Please, humor me and google "9/11 truth" or "Bilderburg group" and see if it doesn't all start making sense.

The odds were pretty stacked for Obama. He didn't need to be black to win. He just needed to not be a Republican. The exact same thing happened in Canada two elections ago. The Liberal AdScam Scandal destroyed voter's trust, so they punished them with a defeat, after ages of a red Canada.
It didn't hurt that he brought a message of economic hope, valid or not. Don't blink? Stay the course? People were scared shiznitless about their jobs and sick to death of war, and the current Government wanted to sit tight and hope for the best. It's no shock that he won. A purple alien would have won, if it was born in Roswell. :P
And really, taking jabs at Obama for public speaking skills and thinking on his feet? Do you even remember who ran against them? :rollin: Watching McCain and Palin was kind of like slapstick.

Yeah. That worked out great.
It's kind of obvious that we all have our opinions. However, the decision to put some of those opinions on display on a public message board may not have been the smartest decision you made today.
