Title: High Temperature in 87 5.0
Post by: jpc647 on January 17, 2009, 12:37:24 AM
Well I fixed the gas gauge, or at least figured out what the problem was...

Now the temperature seems to flutter jus shy of the  red hot mark. The car runs fine, and it appears the thermostat is opening. If I remove the radiator cap after its been running there is no pressure, and you can see the level in the radiator go down and back up a little bit. However I am not seeing any flow from the channels.

I'm wondeirng the the impeller on the water pump has shiznit the bed. Keep in mind its below zero here, and there is that bypass hose. I used a temperature gun on the antifreeze in the rad, it shows about 70 degrees after I drove the car around for an hour. Being below zero, would this be enough to keep the car from overheating?

The thermostat is new, but I'm not ruling out the possibility its bad. The ac condenser(the radiator for the ac) was removed because the ac was junk anyway so there is better flow to the radiator.

Has anyone heard of the impeller coming off? Isn't that more pr0ne in the foreign cars? I'm trying to figure out what is wrong, be it the water pump or the thermostat. I would just put a new tstat in the car, but its a pain in the ass because you can't get at the bolts, everything seems to be in the way.

Ive already replaced the sending unit. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions, thoughts?

your water level wouldn't fluctuate if your water pump at thermostat are bad. It shows that both water is being move and that the thermostat is opening.

I would look at your tempeture sending unit. Unless your blowing steam, or leaking under the car/through the radiator, I dont think your overheating. You should be well above 200 to overheat.

Have you run the car for any codes lately, after doing the swap.
I always check for codes before I do anything with my car as far as troubleshooting the smallest things.
Not that it's related to the gauge problem. but I was just curious.

I have not. The code reader I used before is unavailible. I had bought one at autozone and it didn't work worth shiznit. Where could I get a decent one thats not overbearingly expensive?
