Title: Capital One Blows!
Post by: V8Demon on January 13, 2009, 12:23:37 PM
So, I'm sitting on my couch and I receive a phone call from the Capital One payment office stating that they had not received my loan payment.  Considering I dropped the check off in person to the local branch 11 days ago as I've done in the past, I found this disturbing.

I call MY bank that I wrote the check from.  It cleared January 6th.....

I go to my bank and obtain a printout of my account activity and a copy of the cashed check and fax it to Capital One.  Now I'm calling to confirm the fax was received and of course, no one can seem to give me an answer either way.

Also it should be noted, Capital One has not sent me a bill since SEPTEMBER and I have paid them every month....

What's more is that they changed the account number in NOVEMBER!!!!! I just found that out because of all the phone calls I've just made!  WTF!

According to one of their phone rep.'s it's possible that since I wrote the old account # on the check it will take longer to process, but this is ridiculous.  I've been dealing with this nonsense for 3 hours now and just needed to vent.  Apparently I am not alone as the call volume for their customer service is through the roof.

For those of you with a Capital One credit card or loan account, I would suggest calling to make sure they haven't fVcked up your account and payment info

The # is 1-800-926-1000

That sucks, Paul. I've never heard of a company switching account numbers unless either the customer requests it (security breach, stolen card, fraud, etc.) or the customer closes one account and opens another. Strange.

Never had any issues with my Citi Platinum Select or American Express cards. There was a fraud case about 4-5 years ago that AmEx took care of immediately. Their customer service, for me, has been exceptional; in fact I'd rate them right up there with Apple as far as taking care of my issues promptly, correctly and accurately.

Might be time to think about a different company, Paul. Good luck with the resolution.

What's in YOUR wallet, indeed...

They're too busy counting their bailout money to be bothered with the likes of customers! Sounds like you need another credit card company.... too many of them out there to waste time messing with that.

I had a run-in with Capitol 1 myself a few years ago. I had a credit card with 'em, and got tired of paying monthly fees with so many free cards available. I think it was Capitol 1's own "Hands in my pocket" commercial that gave me the ambition to call and gripe. I called 'em and they told me they could remove the fees for three months, but that's it. Immediately after the phone call I went online and paid the card off in full. A few days later I checked my balance and it was "0", so I called C1 to cancel the account. The person on the other end asked why and I told him. He then cancelled the account.

...Or so I thought. A month later I get a bill. The bill shows that I'd paid it off, but then they took another month's fees AFTER I had closed the account. I called again. The representative recorded my concerns, then reversed the fee and told me the account was closed.

...Or so I thought. The next month comes, and there's a new bill. The fee from last month is on it, plus a new fee, plus a late payment charge because I didn't make last month's payment! I went off the deep end this time and called again. Supposedly got it all straightened out again.

...Or so I thought. The next month... well, you get the idea. Only this time there was an "urgent reminder" that my payment was overdue. And so it went on for six months!!! It was only after threatening legal action that they finally reversed all of the charges and closed the account. I had to get a credit report done to see whether they'd done any damage to my credit rating (they hadn't, else hell would have been paid).

So yeah, Capitol One sucks ass. Been happy as hell ever since with my CIBC Visa...

Yeah I had to get rid of them. I sent a payment into them 7 days before it was due and still got a late fee on my account. No holidays involed either...

Carmen, that sounds a lot like what Angela and I are going through with Royal right now. We closed all of our accounts but one in October, and switched to Scotia to save on fees and get a better rate (our Visa has 3.5% for 3 months, and then only 7.9%). Brutal. They keep charging us the fees, sending us notices and calling us about making payments for November and December. Ange dealt with the November round, getting the charges reversed and then having the accounts properly shut down AT THE BRANCH! This friday I got a call for the same thing and kind of lost my shiznit on the guy. He tells me all of our accounts are still active, I gave him the low down and told him that he should be talking to my branch to get their own shiznit worked out. We're waiting for round three in February.

Chase has been playing me for the closed account/ reversed fee/ new fee/ closed & reversed fee thing for about 4 months now.  It's not cool.

Huh, must be a RBC thing, because I had a similar issue there, too. When I bought the house I closed the RBC account I had in Sackville because it's a 40 mile drive to the nearest branch from where I live. I did that in person, too, and went through a couple of "false starts" with the closing before they finally actually closed it. I did all of those dealings in person, though, unlike the C-1 account issues.

Seems like it's not just C-1. All banks, it appears, suck.

Me and my wife had similar issues with Chase as well. It became a monthly routine until we switched banks. They were shocked that we actually had the nerve to switch banks. Not to mention she's STILL getting past due mortgage statements for a house she short-sold back in July 08. I have yet to find a bank that I actually like, just a few I can tolerate for a while. I swear they think they own your money.

Humm...
I'm not in charge of the finances, But i usualy know whats going on~and i check balances for my mom online.

We have mortgage loan stuff through Wells Fargo, and they are claiming we missed a large payment in Nov/Dec.
We FOR SURE paid this, as it made things very hard for us financially around here, and we still have the paperwork for it and such.

They are now claiming we are behind in our payments, and are trying to be forceful with us now...

I noticed in our online statements, it showed a "PMT Reversal" on a mortgage transaction, we have never seen that money again... where did it go???
Is there something in common between these companies going on here? what the heck...

I have never had a problem with capital one credit card, customer with them since 1997 (prior MBNA).  Do not ever get a loan from a credit card company though,, its a hassel to manage.

When the big 4 credit card companies were up before congress a dozen or so months ago due to an SEC investigation, Capital One really didnt get many questions or any bad rap from congress.

Take one guess who Ange got a call from last night.

I told her about this thread, and the fact that this is happening all over the US and Canada with banks and CC companies. I said that if they call again, tell them the same thing and that it looks like one big common scam to steal back some of the money they lost. And after hearing how they got off your back, Carmen, she's also going to mention them getting a phone call from a lawyer. If this  is happening to so many of our small group, imagine how many people in the whole of the two countries are being ripped off here. I think we've got enough people here alone to file a class action.

I can't get over your issue, Paul. The fact that the cheque was processed is frightening. "What? We didn't get any cheque." *whistles*

I hate big branch banks. When I started my job, they made me get a wells Fargo bank account. Worst idea ever. I signed up for a regular account and kept getting overdraft fee's. I tried to close my account with a $400 overdraft charge and they wouldn't let me. So I changed to a credit union until I could get the $400 to pay back my bank. I waited for about 3 weeks and went to the bank to close my account, and they said I owed over $1200. I told them it must be wrong and added it all up on paper with all of there daily overdraft fee's and ended up with less then half what they said. I had them print out all my papers for 6 months and left. I found a charge for $25 dollars that they charged me every 2 weeks.

I went back and asked to speak to a manager and they wouldn't let me talk to one. So I sat down in the foyer for 2 hours until a manger "had time" to speak with me. I asked them what the charge was for. They told me it was for not having direct deposit. I asked them why there would be a charge for that. They told me it is required for a "premium" account. I told them I didn't sign up for it and specifically asked for the regular one.

The manager asked me where my paper work was. They didn't give me a single paper when I signed up for my account. They told me I had to go to the bank I opened my account with, and speak to the person I opened it with.

Well after two years, the person that opened my account no longer worked there. I asked for every paper with my name on it, and they said they don't have the capability to give it to me. And they they told me I had to write corporate and ask them to fax it to me. I told them I didn't have a fax machine and didn't own a home phone. Me and my wife both have cell phones, so we have no need for a home phone.

I went back to the first bank I talked to and told them I wanted to speak with a manager, and they once again, told me there wasn't one. I sat there until they tried to close the lobby on me and weaseled my way in to talk to a manager. I explained my situation and they told me that I shouldn't have overdrawn. I told them they would be getting a call from my lawyer and expect a supena for a class action law suit, claiming I had already researched it online and found several other suits following the same lines, and stormed out the door. I showed up at open the following Saturday morning and asked to speak to a different manager.

They then told me there was no other manager. I said I wanted to talk with there district manager then, and they called security to have me escorted out. Apparently they get pissed when you yell this is unconstitutional and ask why they've been stealing your money.

I called the bank I opened my account with and asked to set up an appointment for a financial advisor. Luckily the financial advisor was the district manager. I complained for about an hour and 45 minutes, and got them to read over all 6 months of my account and got them to drop all the overdraft charges, as long as I agreed to never open an account there again.

I hate to be the asshole that complains all day, but eventually it can get it done. I have only done it at that bank and the dmv.

My wife still owed money on a credit card there. We decided to get rid of it as fast as possible. The minimum payment was $25. We through $100 a check on it for two months. When we got the bill, they charged us $25 dollars for every $25 we over paid by financing it at I higher rate and charging us.

I went to a credit union and never looked back. I haven't overdrawn a single time since, and haven't had any charges for anything.

*edit*, I ended up opening the account because I didn't have a credit union when I was sent out of town for 6 weeks for work, and my work apparently bounce alot of checks, and the only way they would let me cash my check was to open an account there.

didn't capital one get bought out or merge????

when a company does that, they will change account numbers depending on who buys who, or what system they run......  i had that happen once before when my bank merged with another.....  i also financed a car with household bank and in the middle of the 5 years they sent me a letter that they were changing systems and therefore were going to a 16 digit account number instead of a 12 like i had so they added 4 new digits to the old number..... but i have long since left my "ital one" cards in the shreader....  their customer service was awful and none of them spoke english (at least when i called)... sometime it pays to go with card from a local bank and pay a little higher rate.... those mega banks like capital one and citi and chase may give a little better perks, but their service is not worth the savings

 but that's just my :2c: :)

i had that happen with a bank of america mortgage i had in 2001 when i sent in a payment that was short because i wrote it wrong on the check, but they sent the check back to me and the money was never drafted, so it was still there in the bank

credit unions seem to be the way to go to me...  because you're "technically" an investor/owner....  when i had bank of america and first union, it seemed like they were always trying to find a way to charge me a fee.... my favorite was bank of america paid my mortgage, but it overdrafted so they bounced FOUR other transactions, which all would have cleared first... i called and asked why, and she told me that "we draft the most expensive first because it's usually a house or car payment, and we don't want people to be late with those"  i called her bullsh%t and told her that if that was the case, why did she go ahead and PAY for the 4 that she overdrafted... by her logic, shouldn't she have bounced them and sent them back?  i told her she could have passed the 4 and then paid the house with only one overdraft fee..... she said "sorry sir, that's our policy.... the next week i opened an account with a local credit union and haven't looked back :)

p.s. but all the hassle with checks and the mail is why i try to pay as many bills online as i can...... i don't use the banks bill pay, i go directly to the company (comcast, florida power and light, etc.) and pay there.... i think the only bill i can't pay online right now is my water and they have pay by phone.....  i've NEVER had a payment hassle online :)--- *knocks on the monitor*

It isn't just Chase. When I bought my S-197 I got tired of waiting for my payment book to show up so I went to the Credit Union and made the first payment in person. It "should have been" one month early, based on the date of the first payment in the book when it finally arrived. So about a week and a half later I get a nastygram in the mail saying my payment is late.

Naturally I called them to ask WTF. They told me
1) I hadn't made my payment and
2) despite the date shown on the first coupon in the book, my first payment was actually due the month before.

I assured the woman I had made the payment for the full amount several days before the due date (a month early) The due date is the 2nd of the month. I made my payment on the 28th prior to. So after about 15 minutes she tells me I made the payment, but for the wrong amount.

Thankfully I saved the receipt the teller gave me, and I proceeded to read ALL of the info to the woman on the phone. finally, FINALLY she agreed I had indeed made my payment, in full, and on time.

Since then I have made every payment IN PERSON, and have saved all the receipts, numbering each, AND writing it all down on the stub in the book.

January 20th.......
Still waiting for italOne to process the info I faxed over via their "Payment Investigation" department.  According to them, It's been 4 BUSINESS days.... the process takes 5 to 7.... I faxed the info around 11 AM EST on 1/13/2009.

If this isn't rectified by Friday, I'm seeking legal counsel.

I just contacted "Help Me Howard" (http://www.wpix.com/wpix_help_me_howard) via e-mail and sent him this:

Quote
I have a personal loan account through Capital One.  On January 13th I received a phone call from the Capital One payment office stating that they had not received my loan payment. Considering I dropped the check off in person to the local branch on January 2nd; 11 days prior; I found this disturbing.  I call MY bank that I wrote the check from. It cleared January 6th.

I went to my bank and obtained a printout of my account activity and a copy of the cashed check and faxed it to Capital One's "Payment Investigation" division.  This was completed on January 13th.  I was told by a "supervisor" named "Marcus" that the Payment Investigation Division received my faxed check and checking account activity and began to process it on January 15th.

Also it should be noted, up until that point Capital One had not sent me a bill since SEPTEMBER and I have paid them every month....

What's more is that they changed the account number in NOVEMBER!!!!! I found that out only because of all the phone calls I've made trying to rectify this.  I paid the next month's payment on January 26th as I've been told to due by more than one "account manager" I've spoken with.  When I ask to speak with someone in the Payment Investigation division, I am told that is not possible.

According to one of their phone representatives it's possible that since I wrote the old account number on the check it will take longer to process, but this is unacceptable. Every time I call, about two times a week, I'm told it will take five more days.  The last person I was in contact with named Samantha stated that there was a THIRTY to SIXTY day backlog on this and that it was an ongoing issue with NUMEROUS customers due to Capital One's arbitrarily changing account numbers...

To top this all off, their collection center calls daily as they cannot -- for SOME reason -- view this info that I confirm every time I speak with an account manager.

Other people I’ve spoken with are in the same boat.  Our credit is at the mercy of inept business practices.

The general business phone number for Capital One is:  1-800-926-1000

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,
Paul Flockhart

I've held off on an attorney because I am looking into small claims court first...

Wish me luck.

So I skimmed this thread over and was reading the horror stories and got that sick feeling in my stomach because I have a chase credit card, and have not received a statement in the mail since July 08.
But the last I knew I had a balance of 0 on the account, so I called and not even 5 minutes on the phone had a confirmation that I still owed 0 and that they don't send out statements unless you owe something.  So thanks for getting me all riled up and excited. I was ready for bad news. What a pleasant surprise.
