Title: horn not working, steering wheel swap
Post by: mcb82gt on December 20, 2008, 08:42:11 PM
Just swapped in a 87 mustang steering wheel.

All went well, hooked the 2 wires to the cap, but no horn, no relay click, nothing

If I touch the 2 wires together- no horn

I looked in my manual and it said the horn is on the same circuit as the cig lighter and fuel door release.  Those all work fine.

Horn worked fine before the swap.

Need some help??????????????????????????

The Y/LG and the BK wires are for the horn.
The LB/BK wire is for the cruise.

The main connector in there has
2 black wires
2 blueish green with black dashes
2 purple wires

going to the horn cover is
1 black
1 purple with orange dash

I would suspect the connection between the slip rings and the slip ring brushes.
Do both wheels have the same number of rings?
On your old wheel, check with a ohm meter which two rings are connected by the horn button.
Compare to the new wheel.

I took both wheels apart yesterday.  They have the same number of rings with the main connecter on them in the same spot and same color and number of wires running to the same switches.

Only difference was the horn connection wires, my old wheel they were seperate and came off connectors from the rings

The 87mustang wheel, they came out from the cruise connection hub thingy.

Would that affect my cruise though?

I'll clean the ring and connectors on the column tonight and see whats up.

I cleaned the rings and contact pins, even though they didnt seem dirty.

Horn and cruise work fine now.

Thanks everyone.
