Title: Where is my fuel pump?
Post by: itscold on December 19, 2008, 01:40:01 PM
I have an 88 cougar LS, I let the fuel get to low and it got really cold.  Now the fuel pump doesnt work and i think it needs replacing.  So before i get to far into the project i need to know where the fuel pump is.

The tank must be dropped.

it's not too hard... might wanna consider upgrading it while ya have the tank dropped anyways and making sure your fuel float is in good order. mine had come off the metal rod somehow...

It's super easy if the tank is empty.

awww, that is cool when peeps reach out like that to strangers wanting advice for what some consider "easy" maintenence.

first make sure its your fuel pump by turning on your key(NOT to start) and listen for a "buzz" from the fuel tank area. If you ran the tank low, that is where the water would have settled and it may have frozen and plugged the fuel lines.  Get the car inside and put some fuel in it with a bunch of HEET and retry.  I would do a search on here for fuel pump diagnostics and troubleshoot the electrical system BEFORE you assume its the pump. check this link for troubleshooting...http://www.turbotbird.com/ look for fuel system diagnostics on the first column.  Let us know if you want to change the pump and we'll give you step by step instructions as it can be dangerous with an open fuel cell.  Good luck!

I had 5 gal in it when I dropped it. Put my floor jack under it and lowered it down to a couple of 4x4s on the floor to get the jack out.

Easy.....LOL
getting the rusted hold down locks to turn on the sender and pump was the hard part.
If they're rusted, soak them in wd40 or something before you try to turn anything.

Make sure that you have not hit the fuel pump emergency crash switch in the trunk. You can jar that thing and it will pop up. It happened to me on a 3000 mile road trip in west texas at night. YEEEOOOWWZERS, that sucked. There was no one around and it just stopped running. Please check that first before adding anything.
