Title: 1987 AOD Wont shift out of 1st
Post by: jpc647 on December 15, 2008, 03:40:06 PM
The title says it all. When I removed the transmission to swap it into my other car it worked fine. After installing the 87 5.0 and 87 AOD it won't shift out of first. It'll wind up to about 30 and I got a little worried.

IS there supposed to be a vacuum line? Where does it connect to the transmission and on the other end?

It'll still shift without that connected until it fries itself, and then you get whatever. But yes, as Vin said DO NOT drive without that cable hooked up unless you want a new trans..

I just had to reconnect the cable on my dads 88.the socket that the ball fits in,is all worn out. we squeezed the clip together and it seems to be holding up just fine now.

His had the same problem, would not shift out of first.

The throttlevalve cable, aka "kickdown" cable is the same thing correct?

If so then yes, it is connected. The tranny appears to be down about a quart. I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. If not, I looked in the manual and it shows how to adjust the kickdown cable and such on the 5.0. I'll be out there tonight playing aroun with it.

If anyone else has any suggestions let me know.

I take back that shifting part I was thinking about a different trans, C4 I think.

My trans was a quart low and it would still shift, took longer but it would shift.

Yes the kickdown is the same thing.

I did. I think mine may be a different problem. My kickdown cable appears to be connected.

However, right above where the kickdown cable connects to the transmission there is a lever. Is there supposed to be a bushing there? Mine has a little bit of play in it.

If anyone had a picture of this area on their AOD that might be helpful too :)

when i set mine in park it wouldn't shift out of first. When i set it in drive(the overdrive drive) it worked okay. Could be a coincidence, im not positive.

setting the cable in OD is the best.
