ok, i'm asking now because i cannot remember if i read this elsewhere yet....
the digital dash for the 83-84.... does it have the 85mph top speed? if so, can the resister mod be used for these?
The w-2 mod dosen't exist for 83-84 speedo's as far a I can find. and yes, limited to 85.
the 83 / 84 digi speedo cluster is rare,,
one guy here said he had a full digi cluster in an 83 but never posted pics of it. It would be nice to see that whole setup.
can you post a pic of your speedo? / cluster?
pics coming up. i got it from a friend/customer. he pulled it from an 83 heritage. you saying i got something worth gold here? :hick:
btw...yes i DO have the proper fuel sender for this thing :D

ok, so there are the pics of that which i have (not in the car yet obviously. but will be..i farkin hate that ugly buttstuffog thing with the 80's checkerboard surround.....)
why the hell does my first picture never come up on here?????
post in the advanced screen, and the 1st post will show up.
meh, its just the pic showing the date stamp of may 13 1983.
so, anyone got an evtm or lost ark of diagrams or something to say whether or not i could do the w2 or equivalent?
if i cant, then so be it. i will instead mount a cyberdyne speedo/tach in place of the speedo module lol
I cant help on the 83 evtm but i sure as hell will put this in the diy.
I would feel guilty knowing we have all had the opportunity to see the 83/84 electronic cluster tore down like this and let the thread slip away.
I have no suggestions on a speedo mod other than a question....
do you remember if the speedo is set on Kilometers per hours, were your able to go faster than 85mph?
better yet,, do you remember when you turn your key on only, does your cluster start out by displaying "188"?
If so, its likely you can modify this.
the biggest problem here is your one of a handfull of people i know of with this rare cluster. this would leave little room for error with a test cluster to mess with.
I have documentation for '84. Does your car have cruise? The electronic speedo uses the same speed sensor that the cruise uses.
my 83 digi speedo only shows 85 (my gps said i was doing 94:mullet: )..... the kph button is on the dash and yes, it reads past 100
this is what it looks like at start up
my evtm (for the 83, i have all 5 service manual books) does not show a "full cluster", digital or otherwise.... i don't think it was offered until the 85 remodel... even the 83/84 turbo model only had boost lights, no guage (boost on/over boost)
p.s. since you have it opened, i'd lube the gears for the odometer and where the speedo cable connects to the back..... i've replaced 2 digi clusters and 2 speedo cables before i found out that when it's really cold, they those gears like to chatter
yes, mine does have cruise, but the cluster does have a cable connection on the back for the speedo cable

The "speed control amplifier" in the diagram above is the cruise module.
so, can these be made to display over 85mph, or is lumpy gonna have to gut it and mount a cyberdyne inside? lol

since it reads past 85mph in the metric range, it would stand to reason it could also do so in standard.
This is probably gonna be your code to crack.,, not sure anyone else here can help. I dont have the right tools to do it. Great thread though,, nice to finally get pics of the animal ive heard about.
frankly , all you have to do is put it in kilometers per hour and multiply that by .62 and you have miles per hour,, or 62% of what you see is miles per hour.
for instance, when you finally see 85, that is 137kph
90=144kph
95=152kph
100=160kph
110=177kph
115=185kph
120=193kph
Lumpy, since you have taken yours apart do you know what is involved for removing the fuel guage? I have this cluster in my kids Heritage with a guage problem and have purchased another of these clusters for the gas guage. I have the 83 EVTM and the Ford service manuals and the Thunderbird/Cougar body electrical supplement, If there is anything in there you might possible want to look at I can try and email copies to you or worst case copy and regular mail it.
yeah, i'll grab pics when i crawl out of bed (i love this laptop).
should be pretty straightforward like the rest was. front paned screws, pull that plastic strip off and remove the nuts.
once i'm up i'll do a pic by pic thing of dissassembling the whole cluster.
