Title: Transmission Lines Routing
Post by: jpc647 on November 28, 2008, 03:52:43 PM
Anyone with an 87-88 v8. I need detailed information on how the tranny lines are routed. Pictures or a description would be great. I'm not sure if they go on top of the little lip right below the strut tower or what.

they run from under the tranny cooler, to under the crank and go either over or under the motor mounts. I believe its over on the passenger side, then for the most part, it should be fairly self explanatory.

don't bend them if you can help it. That is how I messed my old ones up. I'll run out to the car and take a flashlight pic. I have done it before with the engine in. Couple of times actually. You may need to finesse it alittle bit. (Read, use a small amount of force, but don't bend them if you can help it)

Thank you... I imagine you have to put them in from the front and feed them back towards the tranny, correct?

Thanks for doing this.

I think I did it from the back to the front. The mounts on the lines aren't really necissery from what I remember. I skipped them the second time. The first time I just stuck the tag thing on the first bolt that lined up. I remember it being near the passenger side of the timing chain cover. I may be wrong there.

I couldn't get underneith the car to get good pics on the side of the tranny. Heres the two from the front that show where they go. That is prolly the part you know though...

Its cool. I like trying to crawl under my car in a parking lot at 9:30 am.

That sounded sarcastic, but it dosen't bug me. I changed out an alt at 1 am yesterday. I guess technically today/last night.

they run like this..........
they start out of the trans
they move forward and along the oil pan
this puts them below the isolator in between the k frame and oil pan
they bend along the front of the oil pan just below the harmonic

next they bend up and into your radiator.

If your new lines do not have the clip holding them together , install them and zip tie them together so they support each other.  There is a factory clip along the k frame dead center IIRC that holds them or groups them at that spot just below the harmonic as well.

This job is sooooooo easy if your exhaust is out of the way.

If you bend them slightly, make sure tune them back.
the fittings will leak if they are not just so.

**note,, if you have given the lines a good hard yank to extract the line off the fitting, you have ruined the plastic insert in the fitting.

Use a piece of thin plastic like a milk jug.  Cut a piece of plastic so it wraps around the line all most all the way around while making sure the piece is about 2'' long.  Roll the plastic around the line then scoot it up into the fitting.  this will open up the plastic ears up in the fitting and allow the line to come out smoothly.

I forgot, but my exhaust was off of my car when I did it to.

ok i really dont know how you guys did this without bending or breaking the lines. No matter what I do, between seperating the lines and twisting them all over creation, I cant get them to go through the hole between the motor mount and the oil pan.

Were you guys using reproduction lines? Made by who?

I really need some help here.

My exhaust is off too.

How high were your cars off the ground when you guys did it?

Well im frustrated, there is no reason why the tranny lines have to bend to go over to the left side of the radiator. Ford was clearly just too cheap to redesign a radiator that allowed the tranny lines to connect to the right tank... grrr.

I' m just going to cut them and compression fit them together to make them fit.

yes, i had to bend mine around a little bit.

I remember now,, i inserted the lines coming in from the front.  You can do it,, just do what you need to do to make it work.  once you have them stuffed in , you can always rebend.  I would suggest you take out the starter to,, that got in my way i think,, been a while.

connect to the trans first, and groom the lines / bend them so they match up to the radiator.

I simply cut them with a tubing cutter and compression fit them. Thank you to everyone who helped me with the routing. It took me about 20 minutes from start to finish, I simply could not deal with the bending and rebending of the lines.
