For those of you who have changed a v6 to a v8 car (FordTruckFreek, turbocoupe5.0 ect), did you guys change the power steering lines or the pump. The pumps physically look the same.
THe power steering line from my 1988 v6 car does not screw in the same way as the 1987 v8 steering pump requires. My choices are to swap lines, or swap pumps. Seeing ford mounted the lines under the motor mount its a pain(now that the motor is already in. what did you guys do?
The 87 pump has a thread, the 88 pump doesn't, the line just pushed in I guess. Any ideas?
wow... I'de like to know as well. I have a power steering pump swap that'll be in progress soon.
cant you just use the power steering pump off of the v6 and bolt it to the v8?................thats what I did,but mine is a 1983,maybe there not the same.
The pump on my 88 V6 went right onto the V8, but I did have to put the V8 pulley on the pump. I think the lines are the same for both engines
Thanks for the information. There appears to be a difference on the end of the lines that connects to the pump. The 87 pump is not threaded and the 88 v6 pump is. The lines on the car requires a thread.
Did you change the pully? WEre the ends of the line, those that go into the pump the same?
If it don't have threads whats it got? on both lines?
the pump has no threads. It appears the line just pushed in.
Did you use a pully removal tool to get the pully off of the pump? If not how did you remove it inorder to get to the bolts for the bracket? How did you reinstall the pully?
I got the pully off with a pully removal tool but am not unsure how to get the pully back on..

usually the new pump comes with a bolt and a washer to install the pulley.Hold the pump and pulley in place by whatever means,tighten the bolt and washer (the steering pump shaft has threads in it) until the pulley is seated where it needs to be.Remove the bolt.Done.It's just a press fit.
your looking at the wrong thing. Yes the line pushes into the pump high press fitting mouted to the pump. It also wobbles a lot as well, correct? Its kinda like the transmission lines and how they wobble but instead, there is a weading band slip ring with an o-ring to seal. Snap in one time only but ive heard you can pull really hard and the line comes out.
unscrew that fitting and off comes the line.
I personally like the older p/s pumps with the smaller pully. they steer much easier and groan less. that 3.8 pump has a huge ass pully on it.

the 3.8 pump has a round collar with an allen lock screw as the "bolt" you speak of. It is a mother to remove and Ive never ever been able to break those to connections apart. I like what you say though, wish it were my case on both my pumps in the parts o'plenty pile.
My mistake,I totally forgot it was a V-6 pump.I take the hit for that one.
I ended up removing the 3.8l pump onto the 5.0 engine. I need a pully installation tool, but I'm hoping I can put the pully from the 5.0 on the pump from the 3.8l. I'll get a pully installation tool tomorow.
it would probably be less costly to locate a ford p/s pump on a 5.0 motor. They have been pretty much the same for 25 years.
I already had the 3.8 off of my donor engine. A new pump at a parts store would most likely be rather expensive. The installation tool is only $8.00. I dont think ill be able to get a pump for $8.00
