Title: Another Snag
Post by: 87TurboBird on November 16, 2008, 01:54:00 AM
I hit a snag today.... Dropped in the new "old" Garrett T3.. Buttoned everything up.... Deleted EGR... Now my bird is having one final issue.. When I start it up and drive it.. It sounds like a constant backfire constantly.... Pop Pop Pop.... The whole thing that started this off was a blown head gasket and Turbo Gasket. Replaced the turbo and replaced the head gasket.. missed a few bolts on th intake. Could Unmetered Air coming in through the "possible" leak in the intake cause the "backfiring"? I missed (well couldnt get to 3 bolts on the underside of the intake). Intake seemed sealed up well. I know I need to make an EGR block plate tomorrow... So God willing the back of my Throttle Body is going to say "Big K Drop Red".... But the popping was before I deleted EGR... I also need to know the vaccuum hose routing on the Garrett.. I have 3 ports on the turbo itself up by where the VAM enters the turbo.. and 3 ports on the "extension" ( the piece that bolts to the turbo and runs to the Throttle body) I have more ports than I did with the IHIRHB5. So I am short a few hoses. If there are any members in Central Indiana would love a second set of eyes to see what i have missed. But any Input is very much appreciated.

Go here http://www.turbotbird.com/
Then look at the top of the page for Tech articles look under tech articles and find T3 swap 87-88 is should be laid out in there pretty good on what to do to install that T3 and get you up and running. Unmetered air is never a good thing on these.
