assuming a mostly stock 5.0 with a carb, hood clearance shouldnt be a problem.  my 83 isa 5.0 cfi, with a summit filter.  hieght is about what it would be with a carb.  hood clearance is fine.

as for carb size, on a 302, you honestly dont want anything bigger than a 600cfm.  again assuming stock.  on a mild setup, such as a good intake, headers and exhaust, cam, prehaps some mild porting, than a 650 is in order.  dont forget to check the timing, and dont forget to tune the carb.

I did the switch many years ago. However, just last year I made the switch from the Ford 2 barrel to and Edelbrock 4 barrel. Clearance wise I have no problems. Here is what I used.

The cam is crane fb-272 H10 Energy cam and lifters
adv. Dur.
272 INT. 272 EXH.

.050 Dur.
216 INT 216 EXH

Carb Edelbrock Avs Thunder series model 1806

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake model 7121

The carb seems to be a little big, in hind sight I probably would have went with a 575 CFM. It runs rich, I just need to get off my :shakeass: and put smaller jets in the primary. But for as often as I drive it, I haven't bothered. Its just a cruiser, so loosing a little performane hasn't bothered me yet.
