Title: C4 on a 2.3
Post by: TheMeaningOfLife on November 01, 2008, 01:02:20 AM
I was reading up and turbo coupes and noticed someone was running a C4 transmission on a 2.3l turbo, i personally cant beleive that the c4 would fit but is this really realistic, i cant find anything for the 2.3 in the search.

If you have the correct bellhousing(fairly rare), no prob... Back in the 70s many of the 2.3s used a C4... Unfortunately before I knew they were rare and desirable, I gave one to the s man about a dozen years ago...

2.0 was an optional engine in early 70's Pintos. 1.6 was standard.
They called the automatic Cruise-O-Matic. Don't know how close that is related to the C4.

The Pinto 2.0 OHC engine was German built, but I don't know if it used the same bolt pattern as the 2.3, it shares no common parts with the Lima engine... There was also a 2.0 Lima which was a destroked 2.3, AFIK it was only used in the earlier Ranger pickups...

Cruse-O-Matic was Fords term for their "dual range" three speed automatics(Sort of like GM Turbo-Hydramatic)... In Ford's case it could have been a C4, C6, or the cast iron Borg Warner(which were the original cruse-Os)... I thought the term was dropped in '67 when the shift quadrant was changed to the std PRND21, from the two Drive config(with those you had the option of starting in 1st or 2nd and then shift to high)... Possibly the term carried on for a few years... Only auto transmission used in the early Pinto would have been the C4... In the late 70s the C3 became mostly the transmission of choice... BUT I had a '80 2.3 Stang that had a C4(one I tossed), while the daughters '79 had the C3...

Ive had a couple of C4's in turbocoupes.

Whats needed

2.0 c4 bellhousing w stepped dowels

          or

2.3 c4 bellhousing

Correct flexplate

and correct converter for flexplate and pilot diameter

You can use the T5 driveshaft and your mount with no issues.

I happen to have the "hard" parts hanging out here:D none of it is cheap but i may part with it

It would seem to be easier to use a 2.3 bell than use one of the sbf adapter plates currently available.
Sleeper T, describe your "hard" parts and what you might want for them.
