Title: ARRRRRRRG!!!!! New Issue, with Turn Signals and High Beam
Post by: CustomT on October 28, 2008, 07:41:51 AM
I swear, the more I put into this car the more starts happening. Ok, new issue. My turn signals work fine but, every once in awhile when you put the left turn signal on, the inside signal is not working or very dim. Most times it is just fine. Also, turn on the high beams and then put on the turn signal (dosen't matter, left or right) the blinkers are correct on the outside but, the signal on the dash is flashing the opposite. For instance, high beams are on, you put the left turn signal on, the left signals are flashing outside but, the inside signal is flashing right and vice versa if you turn on the right signal. Turn off the high beam and all is good.
This all started when I put in an aftermarket console (new speedo, tack, fuel, oil, volt and temp) I reused the circuit panel on the back side of the console for the blinkers and high beam. Wondering if this thing is shorting out or faulty. I am also wondering if this has anything to do with this thread http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=21405 Thoughts anybody?

wow, do you mean instrument cluster when you say "console"?
Something is bassakwards for sure. go to the diy link below for wiring diagrams as well as the sticky in electrical tech and pull up the info on the 1987evtm.
looks like you have a polarity crossed on something and this can only mean one thing, take the cluster back out and do a "stare and compare".

Yeah, instrument cluster, just pissed off on this issue. It's the little things that get you every time. To be honest, I'm not looking forward to pulling the instrument cluster out, I realize it's not hard at all put , just another thing to do. First the freaking windows come out of track, I get them glued back in and drivers side motor goes out, replace the motor and the passenger side window comes out of it's clips again. Just as soon as I get that fixed, the drivers side window one of those clips breaks and now the window is out again. I find some new clips (off a 92 bird) put them on and all is good, the next day the passenger side motor spindle strips so now the motor don't work. On top of all that, trying to find what is drawing power and why when running the vent fan draws more power than it should the blinkers start acting up.....:punchballs: (end rant) I feel better now...:hick:

I guess if you look at the big picture, It's not bad for a 20 year old car. Sounds like something didn't go back in the way it came out. back tracing everything that was done, would be the quickest way to solve the problem.

With all the problems you're having did you check your ground wire going to the body? Sometimes this is overlooked and usually breaks off behind the battery.

Hmmmm, interesting will have to check that out. Well, got time today so I guess I will be pulling the blower motor out and clean the fan, check the ground wire behind the battery and then back track the instrument panel and see what got put back wrong. Will post what I came up with.
