Title: Tire size suggestion for a 16x7 wheel
Post by: thunderjet302 on October 27, 2008, 11:21:15 AM
So I will be getting new tires and wheels for the 88 and I'm wondering what would be a good tire size for a 16X7 wheel. I'd like something bigger than a 225/60/16 or 225/55/16 tire that will fit without clearance problems. Any input would be great.

You won't want to go any larger than a 245/50.  Even at that they are a bit wide for the 7" wheel and you'll want at least a V-rated tire or higher to avoid the "wiggles".

We ran that size on the old black '83 (Goodyear GSC's) and didn't have any issues.

Personally I HATE the feeling of low speed rated tires.  I do not like feeling the wiggle and squirm (and yes you can feel it) as you try and get the car to set for a turn.  I guess that's why all my cars have Z-rated tires on them... even the all-season ones.

Of the 225 choices, the 225/55's would be my personal choice.

Avoid the Wiggles?

Yes, it's near impossible to navigate a corner when those bozos come jumping out at you in the middle of it.  There's always one that runs RIGHT for the apex...

I highly recommend seeing their live show if you ever have a chance.
When our son was between the ages of 3 & 5 we took him to a few of the television character shows and the Wiggles show was probably the only one that I would have paid to see again. Is was pretty cool when they................er...........oops :wrongforum:

Sorry.

I ran 255/50/16 on the rear and 235/50/16 on front they looked good, and handled pretty good for a granny car lol (snow flake rims)

I'm running 235/60-16s right now. They're wider than stock and fill up the wheel wells better.

Car is lowered 1.5" also btw. So take that into consideration. :hick:

Hmm 235/60/16s aren't bad. I'm wondering if I should go with 235/55/16s for a bit lower profile. Do you think those would work ok?

anything more then a 50 series is like a touring tire unless thats what you are looking for.

A 55 or 60 series tire would be fine as I'm not looking for all out cornering ability, ie road race. Either would be better than the 70 series 14 inch tires I'm running now ;)

My buddy likes the 235/55-16 Cooper Cobras he has on his MN-12 Cougar, and I know they've been on there at least two years now. They're a little shorter than the 235/60s.
