Title: Swapped a heater core today.....
Post by: vinnietbird on October 26, 2008, 06:59:14 PM
I have a friend who lives across town who bought an '88 T-Bird for parts (actually,he only wanted the low mileage drivetrain). He said I could have anything I wanted if I'd swap the heater core in his '93 Mustang GT.I said O.K..I got the doors, front fenders, like new trunk carpet, engine harness, and a bunch of little parts (some I have, some are sold....the Bird was crushed afterwards).Anyway.I picked up the Stang yesterday evening and let it sit til this afternoon.I now know I can swap a heater core in a Fox Stang in 3 hours ( I did the Sport's in a little over an hour thanks to Eric's advice and shortcuts),which included running to Autozone for a heater core. Not a bad deal for near perfect doors and fenders and all the misc. pieces I got. Now,there's my little Sunday story I thought I'd share.

I agree. It was his car,and his call on the parts.I was just "paying off" the guy for the parts with my labor.Well worth it to me.I didn't want to get into a conversation about the heater cores and quality. He has another '93 that he drives a lot. He's gonna sell this one,the one I worked on,asap for the money. He needs to unload it.It's a pit of a car.I was sure glad I have a T-Bird after driving that thing.I'll never own a Fox Stang. It's amazing how "cheap" they seem to be.

I don't have a secret,I just followed Eric's instructions.I removed about 12 fasteners, pulled the dash back, pulled the core box back, removed the core, reverse the process, done (For the Bird). The Stang had a few more fasteners to remove, and I had to remove the console,as it attatches to the front of the dash, and the passenger side front seat.No big deal.I read about the Stang core replacement on the Corral, and I think those guys, while trying to be thorough, over complicated the process,as many of the Bird/Cat guys do.It really isn't a bad deal. The first heater core swap I did in an '88 Bird took me 9 hours.I removed the entire dash, went crazy. The second time,on the second Bird took about 6 hours.I talked to Eric,he gave me the simple version of instructions,a little over an hour on the Sport. It's not as bad as it seems when you have the right info. Thanks again Eric.

I suppose that's true.LOL.

I wish they were as simple as the old '79 Cougar I had.Just open the hood, remove the hoses,a few sheet metal screws, and done. You could literally swap the core in 5 minutes.man, what was Ford thinking when they designed these.
