Title: 5.0 performance
Post by: irv on October 26, 2008, 08:55:06 AM
maybe im getting old but finally got on the cougar.
only went to 105 but i was impressed by the
acceleration for a lo-po 5.0. had to try it after putting
in the Mark fuel pump. have the factory headers, 2cat h-pipe
and dynomax cat back, and stock 3.08. feels as fast as
the 86 capri w3.27 rear and heavier too. aint like the old
musclecar days in the 60,s but its fun. maybe i better not
put the mustang motor in. might like it all the way to
ticketville.when you guys say these cars are slow ,what are you
comparing them to? just funnin but i havent put any
miles on it since i got it last year. the bugs arent out any more.
might get 300 miles on this year--irv

Yu can get a ticket in any car,go ahead and install the Mustang motor. The SO engine is a great engine, but compared to the H.O,(talking about stock engines),it's lacking a lot. When I swapped my engines, the SO compared to the H.O. was different as night and day.The H.O has quite a bit more power, and you can literally feel the difference.

Oh yea I could NEVER go back to the way this thing was stock. With H.O., the timing bumped, and the 3.73's out back, on a cool dry night, this thing wows me every time. I almost love just laying into it easy down to maybe 1/2 to 2/3 pedal more than goin WOT...its so much fun knowing it will pull like it does without going to the floor.

FWIW an Explorer motor can be had from a salvage yard for a decent price.....Throw some 1.7 rr's on it with a 3.55 or 3.73 gear in an 8.8 housing with a 2200 stall.  Cheap, easy, effective, and emissions compliant.

Don't you have that 850 mile factory original HO engine? If so it has less miles than the engine in the XR7 right now so it makes sense to swap it in ;)

keep it stock, Save the money and be smart... Even if you put a great HO motor in it the car it will be the same value no matter what...  you will end up putting more money into it then the car is worth.

If u want a hot rod like you said yourself get a 60's car.. lol

My best advise...      Atleast the 60's car will have a better value lol..

gotta love the people that look at cars as only investments and not toys..

spend as much on it as makes you happy, I have spent quite a bit on my XR-7 and I know I will never get it back, think I care?  NOPE, the thousands of miles with a smile on my face it has given me in return is priceless!

Yeah I dont care a bit about the car's worth. For all I care it would be great if these cars are never worth anything...cheap parts forever!!!!!:D  But I just wanted to make it more fun to drive. And boy is it ever.

you mean in my posesion right now?  just the XR-7, I sold the bird a couple weeks ago...  took a $2000 loss on it too!, but I still made enough back to buy my Vortech....

I just recently had a cash offer of $3600 for the cougar with out the blower...  I paid, $1675 for it off of ebay last summer....  didnt take the deal...  to me the car is worth more then anybody will ever give me for it...
