Now I'm not an expert, and,I'm from down south and have never experienced this problem,BUT,that APPEARS to be a rust issue.LOL.Seriously though, that sucks bad.Are you going to repair it or part it out?Down here, that kind of rust dictates the car to immediately be turned into a parts car.I wish you luck on the problem at hand.

EDIT...I didn't see the part about fabbing new strap mounts. My mistake.

If you took away all the rust your car has had,all you'd have left was paint.

When I recently decided to undercoat my car with a potent mixture of old tranny fluid, oil, and other such things, and of course go quite overkill in the process, I made sure to DOUSE the fuel tank mounts. Theyre okay. *OKAY*. ;)  Each one is fine excpet for one maybe two pencil eraser-sized holes. Other than that theyre fine, paint and all. So Im trying to nip it in the bud.

and who says you have to go back with metal straps:D

I suppose you could but if i were you, id use regular banding material.  that is some strong stuff.

Its funny you say that. When I touched my rocker on the drivers side, my thumb went right through. It even looked perfect. There was nothing but paint left on part of the rocker.

Hey that looks familiar,my 88 was like that.
My advice would be to grind the mounts right off the chassis and fab/weld up entirely new units.
Thoses mounts where always weak and had way to many holes in them to allow for water and  intrusion.
By the way ron,you need new PIPE extensions man those things are terrible looking compaired to the rest of the exaust.

What kind of salt do you guys use up there? I'm not from the south, but that rust is something not seen that bad here.

It's not the kind but the ammount. If it's anything like in Chicago the streets are white with salt from the first snow (any ammount even 1/4" will cause the salt trucks to come out) till a good rain in late March/early April.

So will you now stop driving the XR7 in the winter? ;)

My car doesn't see the snow or salt it hiebernates for the winter.
I do snow removal and the last couple of years we did salt a lot more for lack of snow "ice".

LMAO yeah I plan to get some real polished stainless tips for it over winter, was strapped for cash at the time I did the duals and use cheap Chrome tips....
That is the plan about the mounts too Chirs.. I will fab up something similar to the factory look, but a whole lot stronger....
