ive got another one commin tomorow... but its a ford :D
btw, we paid $20 for the 409, and it still rolls over...
$20.00 is a good investment. Some Impala guy will pay big money for it I'm sure.
That's a steal. Quick, sell it to a Chevy guy for a profit and buy a good motor to replace it. Oh wait, you already said you were getting a Ford tomorrow....
The 409's are worth some money in the right crowd.
That is indeed a 409. My dad had one.
Throw it in a Nova Wagon :burnout:
Does it turn over?

shes as free as can be... we rolled her over the minute we got her home...
were thinkin of cleaning her up then gettin her to start on the stand.
if she starts were gonna be some happy fellas.
the motor i was sopposed to get tomorow that has been rescheduled for either tuesday or thursday would be a F700 motor. The great stump pullin 391. and im on the hunt for a busted down F250 to shoehorn it into. :D
hell yea!!
that 409 would be NASTY attached to the turbo 400 i have with a 3k stall, and race shift kit in it.....
That is a truck 348/409 Note the water pump and oil fill
Not a goldmine but still desirable
There's an article on building up a 348/409 in last month's Hot Rod. I don't usually read Chevy engine stuff, but I did read that just because I've always loved the W engines. Nothing against Chevy, it's just that there's only so much you can do with a 350 or 454 before all the stories are the same (I don't read MM&FF magazine anymore for the same reason).
According to that article the truck engines actually have a slightly different casting. The combustion chambers are machined into the block on W's, not the pistons or head. The deck is actually not on the same plane as the top of the piston (when at TDC there will be a wedge shaped opening, the pistons will not sit flush with the deck like they do on a Windsor). The truck engines have a much larger combustion chamber that is actually machined into the top of the bore, and because it's machined into the bore it's not easy to make it smaller - you need pistons with a huge dome on them. The huge domes make the pistons really heavy, which is very hard on the rods. The engine HR magazine built was actually based on a truck engine but had custom pistons and rods (not to mention aluminum heads and a bunch of other goodies). The end result was really nice though...
I figured that was just a model year variation....Most of the 409's I see are in cars that didn't come with them via the factory.
Here's how to figure out which exact one you have: http://www.348-409.com/suffix.html
Reference pics: http://www.348-409.com/ref.html
and our block number is matched according to the 348/409 site that it is a TRUE 409 the casting number on the block is 3857656
http://www.348-409.com/cgi-bin/block/csvsearch.pl?block=3857656
wow shes a real fine 409....
But here's the clinker(from your link)...
Who the hell had a 409 just sitting around? :hick:
Would call for a dome piston with the truck heads or something funky with the regulars....
Truck 409s aren't real desirable, the blocks have a relief cut into them to lower compression. Also the front dress and oil pan has to come from a car to fit in most chassis. They have a different deck height which makes them unique.
It's kind of like the old Dodge and DeSoto Hemi engines. Yep they look good, but they're oddball enough that finding parts is nearly impossible.
They go for about $500 or less usually, but the fact yours turns over (and has a fresh oil leak :D ) means that it may go for a little more. Good score!
