Title: All-new OS (Vista) My ass...
Post by: Thunder Chicken on September 19, 2008, 10:01:33 AM
Ok, we all knew the Vista rants were coming, what with my purchase of a new Vista PC. Surprisingly enough I kinda like the OS, therfore this is just a nit-picking rant. While turning my computer into "MY" computer, I actually dug up an old 16-bit relic from Windows 3.1 days! That's right, a bit of nearly 20 year old code in the new state-of-the-art operating system!

When you go to install fonts through the control panel the "browse" button brings up a window that is straight out of Win 3.1:

It's faster when you switch it back to the "classic" interface (XP sorta). Doesn't fix all the "Where'd that go?" questions either but it helps a little.

My condolences to you and yours on the loss of a reliable OS and your forced migration to the hell known as Vista.

As my family's designated "computer expert" (regardless of actual skill), I assisted a relative with the setup of her new vista computer.  The clock in the new sidebar wouldn't display the correct time.  The time in the old toolbar worked fine.  So, imagine sitting in front of your computer and it is displaying two different times simultaneously.  Very inspiring.

My father went from 2000 to Vista. Most prominent issue was it not shutting off and IE not running. It shuts off now, but IE still doesn't work. Lots of other bugs too. One has a right to bitch when they pay good money to  "upgrade" only to have the old product work better than the new one.

Longest period without virus with XP = 62 days.....
Longest period without virus with Vista = I haven't had a virus yet and have had Vista for 15 months....

I got a couple of virus's already, but most of them are from mp3 downloads.

They should quit cooch footing around and just re-release 2000 with a 64 bit system. It has almost all the good parts of 95-98 as well as the compatibility nearly identical to xp. The only things that didn't work on 2000 that did on xp were things that were designed to not, so that you had to upgrade. I had an old 75mhz system that I ran 2000 on for several years as a server back in the dial up days, and I didn't have problem one with it till my little brother started deleting things to make room on the 4? gig ultra wide scuzzy hard drive for a game.

Well that's a no-brainer, considering XP has been out just a *tad* longer than Vista ;) .  Give it time.  I've been without a virus on XP since I reinstalled it around November last year.

Vista is fine for regular use, but for something like gaming, it is complete suck.  I haven't touched Vista (Vista/XP dual boot) in several months.

Your "point" holds no value as I had XP when brand new too, so what was the story back then?  I download more stuff now than ever......

I also like Vista and have had no problems with it as of yet.
I still have a few things to figure out on it, but that's just learning on my part.
BTW, I've had no viruses since we got the new laptop with Vista and I was getting all kinds of problems with XP  on my desk top, hence the reason for the new laptop.

What's Vista???

Bought this E521 Dell last year when they'd gone back to offering XP, 13 months no problem...

I just upgraded to vista, not by choice (To many of my customers are getting vista and I need to learn it) I haven't had any problems tho it has only been four days.

I like a lot of the new features and still learning how to move around. It is visually appealing! That is all.

I use XP, and have only had one intrusion since this comp was bought new in early 2006....I really don't think the OS has as much to do with viruses as does good habits of scanning everything, and being careful with downloads and websites.
With that said, I'm open to Vista, but then again, XP does everything I need it to do, and I see no need to "upgrade" the OS.

If Win2k would support the hardware I'm using I'd still be using it. Last good OS MS ever produced.

As for Vista, I deal with it enough at work to know what an utter piece of  it is.

Whats Microsoft?

Microsoft is that thing I require to run Mitchell OnDemand. I've actually got Ubuntu on the laptop (dual boot, Ubuntu/XP) but still use XP more often because I'm always looking stuff up on Mitchell.

Oh, and as much as I like Ubuntu, Microsoft is also that thing that doesn't require rocket science to get the wireless adapter in the laptop working :hick: That was a PITA. I almost gave up entirely...
