Anyone know how to tell what year a engine computer came out of? I have two, I believe 1 is an 88 and the other is an 87.
look at the part number. if it begins with "E7", its an 87. if "E8" its an 88.

While that's generally true, numbers are some times "carried over" from one year to the next... Best to check the three digit "catch code" to determine actual usage...
The E9ZFxxxx A9L pictured in the link was built July 15 '91(1G15 is the date code)... My A9L was built in late '88(I forget exact date)

if thats true why does my ecu have a stamp for 3/84 on the back certification label but the sticker on the plug has an "E6" on it?
wouldnt the right ecu for my 86 have "E63Z-XXXXXX-AA" instead of "E63F-XXXXXX-A3A" ? it does have the "FA" on it though.
but on the plug itself the 2 sets of numbers cast into it both begin with "E4LB"

Why does a '87 Turbo Coupe 5speed EEC have a E7ZF(Mustang) prefix??
Why does a '87 Mustang 2.3 EEC have a E7TF(Truck) prefix???
Why does a '88 LSC EEC have a E7SF('87 Tbird) prefix??? This one also has a sticker saying 3.0 Taurus/Sable only...
Why do you think the suffix should be AA instead of A3A???
BTW the E4LB has been stamped into the plug is on every earlier EEC-IV I've seen, has to be a portion of the plug assembly part no... The later ones have E9AF on them....
The best way to my knowledge is to get the 2-3 letter code and tells you the tune the computer has on it unless it has been altered with a tuner, chip, something. As for 2.3t computers they are all talking in this tune code on the metal case. Big white sticker with all the numbers and the tune code letters. Year of the puter doesn't matter as much as the tune. I could get you the numbers but in my turbo coupe I'm running a PC1 tune ECU. But I'm not sure of the number but I do believe that is came from an 86 Turbo coupe.
