Title: Transmission Crossmember
Post by: Masejoer on August 18, 2008, 05:54:44 PM
I don't have the ability to see the car right in front of me at the moment so I can't look, but is there any way to get more rearward room for mounting a transmission to the stock AOD cross member? Can the cross member be flipped or anything to move the mounting slots further back? I'm assuming I just need a new adjustable one to get additional length I need at the back but figured I'd ask before blowing $150 on an aftermarket one.

Can you weld? Anything is possible.

Don't know how to weld but do know DIY. I'm trying to avoid that at the moment due to lack of skill and what I have available to me (can get a welder to use but it seems easier to just buy a different part than learn something I won't need to use again anytime soon. Car doesn't need any metal work.).

Here's the best pic I have, when my exhaust was out... looks like it's about as far back as it can go without welding.

Let me know how you end up getting it to work. I'm about to have the same problem.

The 4R70W is longer than an AOD?

Mount is 1" back, entire transmission is 7/8" or something. Ford Racing says the stock 4.5" crossmember is the same as their adjustable ones, but spot welded to keep it from moving?

Yeah. Doesn't look like the "adjustable" will work.
You've probably already seen it, but here's a thread on the corral discussing putting a 4R70W into a Fox. [1 (http://"http://forums.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=786902")]
I think I'll just buy a crossmember made for the swap. The only one I've found is from Baumann for $119.95 (http://"http://www.becontrols.com/pricing.htm"). Have you seen any others that will work?

I haven't really looked but thats all I've seen. From talking with, I think, Karl Baumann, their crossmember is basically a stock crossmember but with more metal going to the rear with longer slots for the bolts. My TCS already shipped out so I don't have any reason to hurry the decision on whether or not I need to buy an aftermarket crossmember. It sounds like it may indeed go to just welding more metal onto the stock crossmember.

There seems to be much more information on the 4r70w on other Mustang forums than corral. Google got me to some stangnet threads that got into a little more detail but specifics like 2000+ internals were never answered.

Either way, the engine and transmission are going in this weekend as long as weather allows. The transmission just won't be mounted right away in worse case. 3 weekends from now it should be getting tweaked and driven after I get a driveline made.
