Title: 5.0 Accessory Brackets
Post by: 88 Blackbird 5.0 on August 16, 2008, 03:57:46 PM
I think I remember reading where someone claimed that T-Bird/Cougar 5.0 accessory brackets are different than the accessory brackets on Mustangs.  Is that true?  It seems kind of hard to believe.

It is true. I don't have any pictures off hand since I don't have my mustang anymore.

The alternator bracket is the same, the a/c bracket is different.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the '86 Stang used the same A/C, P/S bracket as the Bird/Coug...

At least the shorter belt I used on mine with the under drive pulleys, fit the Bird perfectly when I inst the same pulleys on it...

I'm surprised Ford used different brackets on two cars that share the same chassis.  The Mustang brackets hold the accessories closer to the engine I've been told.  That's just weird that they would do that.

Actually should be the opposite, P/S pump is closer to the battery on the Stang...

I can verify an 86 T-bird not only has different A/C & P/S brackets than a Mustang, but the A/C compressor and A/C Line to the compressor are different too.  The compressor is about 3/4 of an inch shorter on a Mustang.  T-bird compressor won't work w/a Mustang bracket.  The A/C line on the T-bird goes across the front of the car under the radiator.  On a Mustang it goes across the top of the engine.

The bracket thing is really not important, either work fine (provided you have complete sets).  The only  hassle I found was trying to install an ATI ProCharger.  All the Mustang stuff must be used.

irv, you should be ok with those mustang brackets assuming you're getting some new accessories.  I'm running all mustang brackets with a mustang a/c compressor and power steering pump.

I was taught that the Mustang a/c bracket is different so it would lower the a/c compressor for hood clearance due to a lower hood line.
