SO basically, i'm looking for some practical, real-world advice on drivability.
First off, I know the TC trans. has the lower first gear, but the thing is, I'm still using the 7.5 rear and stock gearing, so does anyone have the same combo, and how drivable is first gear with it?
Second, I eventually plan to have an 8.8 3.73 gear in, so I know (or at the very least assume) that I'll want a higher first gear later down the road.
I've got pedals, cable, and the T5 from my TC, just need to pony up for a bell, and clutch kit.
Don't even mess with the TC T-5 behind a 5.0...the 5.0 T-5 has a low enough ratio (3.35)...I'm running the T-5 with 2.73's and first gear is pretty short as it is...the TC T-5 is also not as strong as the 5.0 version due to the less favorable headset.
Good luck,
Don
Sheeit. Here we go again. :)
Just figure 1st is a granny gear and start in second(really easy if you have 3.73s)... You'll need a pilot bearing for a '89 Probe or there abouts...
I wouldn't consider the swap really practical... Buddy had one in his F150 with 3:50 gear, basically it was get it rolling and shift to second which was short as well... He bought the FR "Z" and has been very happy...
Just get a T-5 from a 5.0 mustang. I have heardthat guys that are running 2.3 in mustangs are running the 5.0 T-5's for better gear ratio.
I would like to add a question to this thread and feel it fits.
I have a 86 TC, 5spd. These cars have some sort of goofy clutch cable lever connector on the transmission. What is needed to convert these cars to a standard v8 style T5, adjustable cable, clutch fork setup?
there are two basic options to change the cable setup on a tbird that i know of:
one is a straight pull bellhousing referred to as a D9, i would hafta look up its application....
the other option is a bell pattern adapter so you can use a full 5.0 T5 setup.
The D9 bell is from the early 2.3 RAD-equipped Fox cars(the BW 4 spd trans that had the same bell pattern as the T5) . Mine came from a 79 Mustang.
I know the Mustang 2's used the RAD as well, and you might be able to use one from them, but it would obviously not be a D9 part number.
Quick response I appreciate it!
Found this pic on Turboford, and is what I'm wanting to eliminate. The previous owner of my car has shimmed the cable to pivot arm to allow further disengagement but the clutch let's out right off the floor and is annoying the heck out of me. Since I just got this car I peeped under it and noticed that funky setup..
