Has anyone ever removed the leather and rubber from there steering wheel and just rewrap it with an auto parts store leather one? Other than finding a new/used wheel, any good fixes for this?

On my first '86 I used an aftermarket leather cover that stitched up on the inside of the wheel, much like the factory cover does. I wrapped the wheel with a thin foam tape over the original leather and stitched the new cover over it. I liked the extra thickness.
I've been looking for the same type kit for my '88 and can't find one here. I have found the foam-backed, perforated vynyl ones with the spiral wrap that holds them in place, but they really don't appeal to me.
use a fox bodied Stang wheel... they are a little smaller in diameter, but quite a bit thicker... I really like the feel and look it gave my Cougar...:

I've been thinking of using a Stang wheel as well.
Yup been there done that. Both rewarped with as Parts store one. That sucked to big for my wheel so It came right back off. Went to the good ole Leather Store and picked up some leather. Went home and got creative. Made my own. I took the factory one and laid it out on my work table. Then I took my new leather and Cut out the shape. Then I folded the edges like the factory would. I used glue to hold the edges down. Then I had to have some padding the factory stuff was toast. So I bought the foam cover at the parts store. You guys know that one that they have made since the 70's Black foam with the holes and the oh so nice plastic wrapping . I had to cut it down so it didn't over lap in the middle. Then time to punch some hole in the new cover and sew the end together. Then slip it over the foamy and sew it up! If you aren't so crafty I guess I could make you one. It will cost you though. I've made more than just a steering wheel cover here take a look.

I cut the parts that wouldnt lay flat out and wrapped it in electical tape! get to keep the thickness that is was and its cheap. Was a temopary fix but it holds up so good it doesnt bother me enough to replace it.
Am I the only one who has a factory leather wheel that doesn't seep goo? :hick:
Never had a problem with my steering wheels. But guys, really? A stang wheel?!? It's so hideous, our bird/cougar wheels are so much classier :D
not if you dont have a TC.... though even that is a matter of opinion... I dont really care for the TC wheel myself
I prefer the Sport wheel over the TC one (I've got a TC wheel in my car now). My old Sport wheel wasn't seeping goo, but the leather wasn't the greatest...
I just switched out for a not-wrapped one. Didn't want to mess with it too much.
I think I am gonna do that too. Take the one off my 89 stang for the Cougar and just get a grant wheel for the Mustang.
