My 86 5.0 Cougar was giving me trouble a few weeks ago. It was revving up really high while I was driving and while I was idle. I replaced the TPS, fixed the problem. Also replaced the Idle Air Control Valve while trying to fix things. Drove fine for a few days. I let it sit while I was out of town for about a week and a half, and came back and I have a new problem...
Now when I start the car, the idle drops way down and it usually dies the first two or three starts, even when I hit bring the throttle up. If i get the RPM's up high, it will run for a while okay, but even with the throttle up, the it will still drop way down. And when I drive, it will pull and jerk, as though the transmission is dropping, but it's not even switching gears... I took it to a shop and they just wasted my time, but thankfully not my money...
Any help you experts can give me would be great. Thanks!
TV cable?? that may explain the no shifting, as for the idle have you checked the timing?
when I say not shifting gears, I mean that the problem isn't occuring when the engine is shifting gears. I mean the problem is happening when it's just rolling along, not accelerating or shifting gears.

the shop i took it to said they ran codes and weren't getting any. i actually have never tried to run codes... and i don't know how either, which probably doesn't help you guys help me, i guess...
i have to replace the valve cover gaskets, and i'm going to replace the intake gasket as well, so when i take everything apart, i'm going to look for vacuum leaks and anything else that might be out of place. i'm still a newb at this stuff, so i'm trying to learn as i go... this is just driving me crazy because i've had problems for the past year or so with this thing and it's idling problems and all...
i got an OBD 1 Code reader and i'm getting KOEO Self Test fault code of 34. Book states it's either "Insufficient EGR flow or EVP voltage high or PF"E bsensor voltage high or out of spec" or "defective EGR pressure transducer sensor".
I'm not really sure what that means, quite honestly, and could use the help...
the website for the reader says the code is "EGR valve not opening properly"
I'm assuming that means a vacuum line to the EGR is rotted out or something and needs replaced?

Well, I pulled things apart this weekend and there are a few possibilities...
Bought a new set of gaskets for everything, will be replacing everyone from the throttle body to the upper intake to the valve covers. That should help some possible problems.
I cleaned the EGR and all, and noticed that the plunger has a small hole in the orange plastic, wondering if that might be an issue.
also found that the PCV valve grommet is cracked and broken to . I believe it just sits in the grommet, which sits in the lower intake, so the grommet being ped out shouldn't be much of a problem, but curious if that might also be an addition to my problem.
Hoping to get this thing back together and test it out soon and see if i'm going to need to replace the EGR or EVP. It's been hot as here, so I haven't done much lately.
Will keep updating as I go. Any more idea's, please throw them at me!
Did you pull any KOER codes?
I'm thinkin that those older ones still have the non electronic tranny. From what you describe it sounds like the Modulator in the tranny is toast. Never know though.
No KOER codes... I haven't gotten the engine back up and running yet enough to run any KOER codes. Trying to take care of the KOEO code 34 first...
The other note about the tranny modulator, would that cause the engine not to run smoothly? or wouldn't that cause shifting problems?
AODs don't have a vac modulator. The TV cable controls the line pressure and shift points.
can anyone tell me how to check or clean the crankcase PCV filter? or if i need to bother? I can barely reach the thing, let alone get at it enough to possible pull it out and replace it... i assume it needs to be replaced, since it looks pretty nasty in there, but don't know how to pull it out...
also... going to put my upper intake back on, and i have a vacuum line that i don't know what it connects to... i've got everything else mapped out, but i can't find where this one is... anyone have a vacuum line diagram for 86 5.0?
nevermind, i'm a moron... got everything on the intake hooked back up... still have to pick up my parts and we'll see what happens...
well, got everything back together, new EGR, new EVP, all new gaskets from upper intake to throttle body... and it still dies at start up, and idle's up and down, and pretty much runs exactly the same and sucks terribly... any more thoughts?
update, in case anyone was still paying attention...
Had a mechanic friend of mine from church come by and take a look at the Cat, and he recommended I change out the MAP sensor, since that was just about the only thing in the air system that had not been changed. changed that out, fixed the problem. Cat's back up and running!
