im trying to decide if i want to get a xbox 360 or a PS3. ive heard some ps3's wont play ps2, or ps1 games. and i dont like the $100 price tag on the 360's wireless adapter.
i mainly want rock band and rock band 2(when it comes out). my older son likes the Halo games.
how's a guy supposed to chose?
get both... craigslist it!
that'd be nice.
do you know which ps3's are backwards compatible?
ps3 man.
I have both(xbox is my son's)and the blu-ray feature, built in wi-fi and much bigger hard drive make all the differance.
Plus the ability to play the older games,(u have to get the ps3 with the 80gb hard drive to be able to play the older ps2 games as the 40gb does not have the emulator)but honestly who needs older games when you got the new stuff.
360 also will not play many of the original games(and there are quite a few)found that out the hard way(after purchase).
The 360s hd dvd player is also defunct now as hd dvd is now longer being produced.
The choice is clear in my books.
I would have to say XBOX360 the 20 gig is $300 and the new 60 gigs will be $350 and the 120 gig will be $450. With the price drop on the 20 gig system i say buy a xbox and Halo3 if you want.
Xbox 360 is the way to go, it has a better game library and more attractive price.
i have both. i used to play the 360 non stop, then i got the ps3. now i play neither of them. i feel i need to play the ps3 since i spent so much money on it. i dont really like it though
i will admit, drakes fortune was by far the best game i have ever played. but other then that, nothing i really like
i like the 360 better, it has a lot of the old star wars games that work on teh 360, and i play those all the time. forza 2 is a million times better then the Gran Turismo games
i play neither of them, i think because if i play the 360 again and dont use the ps3, then i wasted all that money
if you do decide on the ps3, most of the 80gb and the all of the 60gb systems are backwards compatible. the new 80gb are not
the 60 gb might be the hardest to find since you cant get it in stores, thAT one is hardware backwards compatible, the 80gb is a mix of software and hardware. i think most people charge more for the 60gb since it is a true backwards compatible
Its a no brainer you get blu-ray player and game console in one package. Not to meantion the other stuff you can do with the PS3.
I only play 2 games right now COD-4 and warhawk. I'm going to buy MGS4 and GTA4 after I finish with my car because I really don't have time to play them now. Theres a ton of great games out now and coming this fall (Little big planet is one on my list) and next year (resistance fall of 2 and killzone 2)
And if you like online shooters did you guys see this announcement:
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53676
A new PS3 action MMO is in development by SOCOM creators Zipper Interactive.
MAG, or Massive Action Game.
256 players per battle.
1 persistent world.
Only real players.
Broken into 8-player squads.
Character growth based on performance and actions.
Vehicles.
Cover system.
"It's not remotely possible anywhere else," SCEA CEO Jack Tretton teased. "There's nothing like it on the market today."
MAG will not arrive on PlayStation 3 this year, but a more specific estimate was not provided.
Go PS3 man its a great all around package.
How does the 360 have a better library??????????????????
Just because it's been out longer?????????????
Not,ps3 has some bitchin games, but again BLU-RAY and WI-FI make all the difference.
After spending 100.00 on the wi-fi adapter 360 is the same price as the better ps3 AND you don't get a BLU-RAY player.
some people get confused with quantity vs quality. add me to your list dominator my psn is boneyard123
Oh and if you are going to get a PS3 wait because the 80 GB PS3 w/ dualshock 3 controler will be $399 this fall. If you get it now it will be a 40GB and no DS3 just a regular controler same price
Just depends on what kind of gaming experience you want. I was a loyal PS fan until the PS3. Their overall library just does not interest me. The main reasons I wanted a PS3 was for Final Fantasy (which is now being released for the 360, thank goodness), MGS, and Grand Turismo. I could care less about Blue-Ray as I don't have a true HDTV setup. Although I do have my 360 connected to my 22" WS monitor... HD was just not a selling point for me.
Most of my friends/family have a 360 so it was a no-brainer to me. Who wants to be the odd man out? I only know two people with PS3s and they really don't play them anymore. XBL is awesome. I do agree the $100 wireless adapter is ridiculous. Which is why I haven't bought one. As is the 120GB HD that I will need to purchase soon, 20GB is nowhere near enough space for downloading content from XBL. Good thing they are phasing those out for the 60GB model. I find myself deleting stuff all the time. I do like the streaming movies idea coming from Netflix this fall. Downloading a 5GB movie can take some time. I seriously hate the MS Points system though. And it took me awhile to get used to the 360 controller. The PS controller is just natural to me.
If Blue-Ray is a concern, I would go with the PS3. If playing online is a concern, 360. If console specific games are a concern, go with that console. If the games you want are for both consoles... 360. Good luck to ya. :):)
I'm in the same boat kinda.....Looking for a backwards compatible PS3. Interesting how the newest version of the 80GB system does not have that feature:mad:
How the hell do you know you're holding one that's backwards compatible in the store before you buy it?
Are you sure that the newest 80gb does not support that????
I know the new 40gb and i think they are doin a 60gb do not support it but i thought that was part of the extra expense and a selling fetaure of the 80gb.
I just kept my old PS2 and got a 40GB PS3. If you want games like Gran Turismo, Resistance Fall Of Man, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, MAG, SOCOM, MGS4, etc, go PS3. I have one and I love it. A year ago, the 360 would have been the clear choice due to the game library, but over the past 6-8 months, Sony has been coming on strong with some great titles. Apparently, some people are still living back a year ago.
Go PS3. I would just keep your PS2 if you have one; even the backwards compatibility of the 80GB isn't 100%. I'd rather save $100 on the 40GB, and then just buy a 160GB laptop HDD to put in there down the road.
I have a PS2, 2, ps ones (the originals not the small ones...) an N64, and an original regular nintendo, with many games for each... I love the regular nintendo and still play it quite regularly LOL... guess I am trapped in the 80's, LOL... ALL my cars are from the '80's and my favorite system is from that era...
I plan to buy a PS3 soon, but from the sounds of it I will wait til fall...
i like the role playing games alot. but im waaaay behind on what's out there now. i played a lot of Ghost recon online, and still play it every now and then.
are the HDD's manufacture specific, or can you just buy a regular internal hdd to replace the existing? i dont know shiznit about modding these consoles.
Any laptop HDD will work in a PS3. There's a little bay on the side you pop open, the drive slides out, and all you have to do is take out a few screws, replace the hdd, and put everything back in. You do have to back up your stuff before hand, though. There's more info on it at Gamespot, and other sites.

that's great. i decided on a ps3, but the article doesnt say if it's going to be backwards compatible. is there any ps3 that is? and i have a ps2 now(since Dec '07). will the wired controllers work with a USB adapter?
the new ps3 80gb will not have backwards compatible, that is what they meant when they said it will have the 40gb capabilities with the bigger drive.
sony was losing a fortune on each ps3, until recently when they changed to a smaller chip (without the backwards compatibilty) and they got the drives cheaper.
as far as any laptop drive workign, it must be a SATA 7200 rpm drive, it isnt any laptop drive
as far as wifi on the 360, it has internet just not wireless built in.
my 360 is connected directly into my router as my ps3 is. for me, i get better connection speeds with it hard wired
if you can find an older 80gb ps3, i think around 6 or 8 months old, it will be backwards compatible. best to ask an employee to be sure how long it has been there.
all the 60gb are backwards compatible but they are hard to find and very costly since they are true hardware backwards compatible where the 80gb is hardware and software
there are connectors that will make your ps2 controllers work with the ps3, but the ps3 controllers are great because you can turn on the system with the controller and turn it off, you dont have to get up to switch it off.
if you get the ps3, get drakes fortune. it is by far my favorite game ever
cod4 is great too but the network play is shotty at best. you will constantly get dropped out of rooms, you might get 3 or 4 rounds then kick you out and you have to go again. it once took me an hour to get in the same room with a friend only to be kicked out after 2 or 3 rounds, then having to spend time again
I had read something about different SKU #'s for the newer core version without compatibility. I guess that's one way to find the difference. Apparently Sonystyle.com has already pulled the current 80GB version with backwards compatibility.
If I'm gonna pony up that much cash for a game system/blu-ray disc player than it had better have backwards compatibility.
Looks like I'm waiting for the 120GB version......
Funny how it's near impossible to find the compatible versions while the regulars are
EVERYWHERE!Corporate Bull!
i should be picking up a 40gb ps3 tonight. Craigslist FTW!
i already bought the rock band disc, and my ps2 instruments will work with the ps3. i saw 60gb mobo's on ebay. maybe i can swap it out, and be able to play ps2 games, too?
Considering that most of the software developers that were intending on keeping PS3 exclusives (Square Enix for example) are cross platforming that must say something about the PS3. Blu Ray is of no concern to me why pay 30 to 40 dollars for a movie i can get on standard DVD for 20-25. Unless LA Noir moves to the XBOX 360 i wont be buying a PS3 at all.
What tv you using? On a 1080p set you would want blu-ray. Plus not to meantion PS3 does an awsome job upconverting dvd's to 1080p
ive been playing it now for a couple of hours. already bought $20 worth of songs. only bad thing is, is that i have to use the py guitar that comes with Rock Band. my other wireless guitar plugs into the controller port on the ps2, but the ps3 only has USB ports. :(
nevermind!
found this gem!

i think the ps3 not being backwards compatible is the stupidest thing I've ever head of...
Apparently Best Buy still carries PS3's with backwards compatibility 'cause I picked one up today :D
Got the Metal Gear Solid 4 pack, a couple of new games and an adapter for the memory cards for my PS1 & PS2 games. :burnout:
cool, so how you like MGS4? I was going to pick it up but only after my car is running, I didn't want to get wrapped up into a game right now, plus cod4 and warhawk get about 5-6 hours a week out of me already.
Haven't played it yet.....Threw in the GT5 Prologue for about 30 minutes and that's it so far....
I'll give you a review of MGS4 tomorrow ;)
why not get a Wii? I've been stuck on Driver PL for the past couple months.. game is awesome kind of like a mix between the original driver and grand theft auto
what size HDD does the PS3 have from Best Buy?
I believe they offer 40GB and 80GB versions; just like every other retailer.
Can't you use PC plug in hard drives to add more Memory? and most of the time there cheap at best buy and what not.
Is anyone playing Orange Box right now (Half Life/Portal/Team Fortress 2)? Im Playing Portal at the moment and its freaking awesome but i am stuck on level 15, its always fun to make two portals so you continually fall through them.
*EDIT*
Just got a Vizio 26 inch LCD HDTV with 2 HDMI Ports (One for my 360 and the Other for a PS3 if i ever get around to buying one) I love the way Oblivion Looks on this TV not to mention Forza looks freakin amazing.
