Title: after 3 years at sonic i got fired for eating a 1/2 price burger on burger night
Post by: Carpimp1987 on July 15, 2008, 02:27:29 AM
also for not wanting to work more than a 65 hour week and for walking across the street to SUBWAY everyday since my GM took away our 50% discount on our food.

So whats this world coming to a guy getting fired for eating a burger at cost and working for a place for 3 years and 1 day???

To bad they still owe me a week vaction time to collect thats a 40 hour week and i only was working 35 hours this week unless i worked other peoples hours.

Got a interview on WED with another place 1 hour before i went to work today. Thank god and i also ate a whole meal today for the 1st time in 50hours because snacking does not count and i did not eat sonic even if i had to.

Unless there was a signed contract, they don't have to give 2 weeks notice to fire someone. So, sorry, no severance pay. It's fast food, not a huge multi billion company.
You'll be lucky to get the vacation pay they 'owe' you. I'm sure somewhere in their rules for working there it says something about not getting vacation time if you get fired. They usually cover their butts on things like that.

As for being fired for eating a 1/2 price burger on burger night.... were you working at the time? Were you on your break at the time? Or were you grabbing a quick bite on the clock?

Mmmmm, I remember the days flipping a "straight 48" (that's 48 burgers on the grill). Man, I hated everything about that job - so I got my GED and went to night school, then normal college. Screw those idiots - worry about your personal growth.

Things must work different in the states.
In Canada it does not matter if it is a mom and pop shop or a multimillion dollar buisness,if they cannot show that they have 2 written warnings against you and they let you go, then they owe you by law.
Not sure if you have a labour board but if so i would call them, they will tell you the laws in your area, i have filled with them twice on two different companies and they have both had to pay vacation and severance, plus they where put under investigation as they could not prove just cause.
Anytime they write you up or have a complaint against you, it must be written and signed by you or it counts for nothing, otherwise they could say whatever they wanted about you after the fact.
If it's not signed,no proof.
You are also entitled by law to your vacation pay as it is your money that you earned not a bonus that they give you.

In the US, you do what I did when I was improperly fired from a job - throw bolders on the managers car from the cliff next to the parking lot :rollin: (I'm not advocating this stupid behavior BTW - just making a funny (true though)).

i know you guys don't live here heres a quote form someone that had went to my sonic many times see what they had to say its all good if i get the job tomorrow and a weeks paid vaction be fine with me.

Umm, guys...I am not sure if any of you have ever been to Andrew's Sonic, but I lived and worked about a mile away from it for almost 2 years... i did not edit his post at all even if i don't like my nicknames.

If you went up there and Pimpin was working, he was the one that answered when you hit the red button, he was the one that brought out the courtesy tray, and he was the one that brought you your food...FAST. Then when you left he was taking the trash outside and throwing it away while other people stood inside and jacked around.

I have been to that Sonic before when Pimpster was not there and let me tell you it honestly does suck. I waited for a freaking drink for 15 minutes one time and finally got sick of waiting so I left. This was the norm when Pimpin wasn't there. If we pulled up and the Captain America warship wasn't parked there, we left and went elsewhere.

Whether you like the Pimp or not, he really held that place together because he actually would work.

Screw it pimp, go find a better job. That's a horrible reason to fire someone, I have a feeling you could sue that place and walk away with some $$$.

Make fun of my parts car like i give a  not like i have not listen to that for 3 years now i can take more abuse than i should and that why i worked at sonic for 3 years. So forget sonic and they can replace me with groups of people but they can't get a single person to do what i did for the same price or even close.

Theres really not much being left out other than i think i got set-up because i am to honest and i don't think some people can stand the turth or their mistakes being told outloud.

If you say so.....
Details still left out -- not surprised.
Better keep the $2 bills to pay off everything instead of getting new stuff now....
Just to let you know - an overwhelming majority of people who are fired from employment feel that they were model employees.
I guess everyone in prison is innocent as well.
Maybe reflect upon any and all transgressions that occured while at that place of employment and learn from them.

You still didn't answer my questions... were you on break or on the clock when you were eating?

It makes no sense what so ever that you'd be fired for eating a burger on your break or while off the clock.

i was set-up and there was only 2 or 3 people that wanted me fired so my GM fired my and my supervisor did not even want me to get fired.

Also i was on Break when i rang up and paided for the burger and it was like 6 or 7pm on Tues night which is half price burger night so at the time i paided 100% of the price and theres nothing i have really done really wrong and i don't care where i work as long as i get some overtime.

you can work your ass off all you want working fast food, but unless your up for a management postion, your just putting more money in someone else's pocket. They'd rather have some mexican or high school kid work there then listen to you bitch about not getting a raise after working there longer then they have.

Get a job where you can move up, or where you can work as many hours for more pay. If you were making $12 an hour, you'd only have to work half as much...

Not all of us feel like we were wronged when we got fired.  Sometimes, some of us know exactly why, and also agree we were out of line and deserved firing.  On the other hand, I was certainly wronged just before I got fired, and my reaction is WHY I got fired.  The AM didn't appreciate me waiting for him in the parking lot, and went so far as having TPD drive by and advise me to leave.  The WUSS!

I worked at a Mickey D's to get through college as a second job, along with building swimming pools and servicing them any available daylight hours I had.  I had the grill to myself one night, and a huge tour bus pulls in.  After being told numerous times not to fill up the freezer by the grill at night to avoid handling the meat any more than necessary, I got caught with barely any meat in there, and 200 hungry people in the lobby.  I made a mad dash for the freezer in the basp00get, grabbed a box of meat, quickly stacked it in the freezer (mind you I was also cooking at the time).  When I emptied the box, I put it on the floor, and gave it a boot to the back door.  The AM, who suffered severely from recto-cranial inversion, decides to call me down in front of all the customers about booting the box back there.  He was already freaked about the rush, which I was thinking "cool, finally something to do" about.  I went to the point of taking my apr0n off, with the intention of leaving him with all the customers, and one counter person besides himself, but went ahead and finished the rush.  When done, I asked him to come back to the grill, and told him very politely that if he has a complaint about my tactics for handling a rush by myself, to take it up with me when the rush is over and in private, but NEVER EVER talk to me that way in front of customers again.  He, feeling his managerial oats, decided to yell at me again.  Bad move.  At this point, the store was closed, and I told him I'd meet him in the parking lot to adjust his attitude, when both of us were off the clock, and better explain how he should talk to me.  I did have full intentions of wearing out a 32oz softball bat on him, but TPD convinced me I should go home.  This guy had been there all of 3 weeks, and I'd worked in that store nearly 4 years.  Lets just say Affirmative Action gave him a wee bit too much power, and he let it go to his head.  The senior manager came in the next night, and when I showed up, he hated to let me go, but had to, lest I whip the AM's butt right there in the store.  I was PO'd, but it was my last semester in school, and since all my big expenses were done and over with, I didn't care about losing the loser job.

The only problem I had with it later was filling out job applications.  "Disagreement with management" is NOT exactly what any prospective employer wants to see on an application for a reason why you were fired.  Fortunately for me, I was able to leave that job out of the picture because it WAS a second job.

For the record I said an overwhelming majority -- that is not the same thing as "all"  Those who agree with the fact that they were out of line and "deserved it" as you put it are those who learn from their mistakes.

My boulder firing was quite simple actually (this was also a college side money job as a stock boy). I had made my usual July 4th plans and 2 months before the 4th I told the manager that I couldn't work on the 4th. Well, Mr. Smug Smarty Pants decides he's going to schedule me to work on the 4th anyway. I told him I would NOT be there as I had my previously decribed plans. He was effing with me for some reason - probably because we talked about his wimpy not-so-macho self at times - he knew I didn't care for him but I was always professional and did what I was told (even though us inner city kids felt like he should have his ass kicked for bringing his sorry ass whiney attitude with him to our part of town).

Anyway, July 4th came and went. He called me in the office and "released me" - I argued that he was informed about my plans 2 months in advance. He acted stupid and tried to act like he had some sort of authority over me. Bad move. Nobody who I don't respect has authority over me - nor can they give me advice once they have fired me. So, later, with another local kid who was also fired for similar personality conflicts with this little homo from a "nice" part of the city, we climbed the cliff near the store and looked down at this vehicle. Man, such giddy fun it was tossing large rocks down - especially the ones that reached the intended target. We were asked about the incident later - we denied it with the shiznit-eating grins on our faces that only "yeah, we did it, but you can prove it" people have. I'd still kick that guys ass today - even if it was over 25 years ago. Too bad it's so difficult to deny that it isn't your fist mark in his eye :D

Must be much worse in the USA than Canada, when a McJob actually matters. In Canada the fast food places let employees get away with murder because they can't replace 'em. Down east all the labour has moved west, and out west nobody moves thousands of miles for a McJob, so service employees are hard as hell to find all over the country. You can't find a fast food joint, gas station, or corner store in this country without a "Help Wanted" sign hanging in a window. Some even have resorted to renting mobile signs advertising thier positions. Most have even resorted to *gasp* paying more than minimum wage...

Oh, and Carpimp: It's "PAID", not "PAIDED". Not trying to add to your woes by picking on you, but "PAIDED" has to be the worst grammatical error ever (and with you and your utter lack of punctuation, proper sentences and paragraph structure, that's saying something). Say it out loud (please don't tell me you always say it like that). It sounds stupid. For God's sake, have someone proofread any resumes you send out, or you'll be jobless for a long time...

Regardless, I've been let go for going above and beyond without question.  I worked for 5 years as an armed guard for a security company.  This last fall, after my son was born, and we were short of cash, So I decided to pick up extra shifts, like I had in the past.  ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why management would be mad with me, as I actually WAS an model employee. The problem is that I let the company walk over me for so long...they expected it of me.  So FF to this last fall, I take some extra shifts.  My son (2 moths old) gets pretty sick, and 2 weeks ahead of time, I let the owner of the company know (i had a good rapport with him) that i really needed to cut down for a while.  He said okay, thats fine.  I gave him a few dates for doctors visits that were set in stone, a moth out.  No problems yet. i even submitted it in writing.  They only required a 7 day in advance warning according to the handbook.  So I get to the week of the first appointment.  I get my schedual.  I'm working when i had requested off.  I ask them why, and i get a runaround that they had nobody else to work.....so again I roll over and say, Okay, but this can't happen again.  The next week...same thing.  The week after, I'm pissed.  Guess what I found out?  They had plenty of people to work....and some of my co-workers stated that they had been wiling to work the days I needed off,  but the boss said no.

I nicely tried to speak with him...but all of a sudden he was "too busy".  I let it go for another week.  I finally get to talk to him and he gives me a big schpeel about how I'm a supervisor and i need to help the company out.  i calmly stated that i have done nothing for 5 years but help this company and cover people's asses so we didnt loose accounts.  I stated also that i had NEVER been late, NEVER called in sick (even when i should have been in the hospital a couple of times) and had never even gotten a pay raise. I also said that I don't request days off.  I had this time because my newborn was sick.  He didn't care.  my hours were cut to barely 20 a week, and by this time it was gettign to be christmas and in the dead of winter.  I was promised more hours all teh time, but never got them.  My children's christmas was horrible, we barely made rent, and if it wasn't for state asistance, we would have had no food on the table.

Thas why I quit...they forced me out.

Point is, i moved on to a great Job, and I'm getting paid a LOT more.  And no stress, practically.  you will find something man, and it will get better.

Not really i just wanted a 1/2 price burger like any custmer on a tues night.

Here what my old boss wrote about me 2 years back 2 bad he fired me and i can't make him any more $$$.

To whom it may concern;
I am writing this  letter to give my impression of kind of person that I believe Andrew Winton to be. Andrew is the kind of employee that every boss wishes they had, he is always early to work and everytime he is asked to stay later he has never said, "NO". When asked to do a certian task he just says ok and does it without question. If he has to be corrected on his performance he says yes sir and gets it done. The best I can tell Andrew upholds the Scout Oath and the Laws in everything that he does. He has been a very big asset to me and my whole management team every time that he works. I believe Andrew should definitely be considered for the honer of the Eagle Scout.
Thank You , Jason S.

I'm not saying you weren't a good employee, but I doubt a ton of people are going to say ", Andrew's not working.  Let's go to Taco Bell."

And maybe your work ethic is fantastic, but its a little hard to comprehend when I can't even comprehend what you're trying to convey with your keyboard.

I don't care what he does to his cars (as far as I am concerned it has nothing to do with this thread anyway).... and yes, I do hope he finds another job.
I just find it very difficult to believe he was fired for eating a hamburger he paid for on his break while at work. There has to be more to the story. And to say he expects to get a BMW out of it is ridiculous.
Come on... you guys have got to realize there is more to the story than he is letting on.
So, what... because I'm not kissing his ass over the situation, I am being mean? Whatever.  If he was standing in front of me, I'd be asking him the same questions.... I'm old enough to know when a story sounds wrong and there is something missing.  I've worked in enough places to know that there is more to being fired than eating a burger on your break time.

Truthfully, it doesn't matter to any of us why he was fired (unless he was spitting in the burgers and selling them to us). There may be more to the story, but it's none of our business. I think a lot of the animosity shown toward the little guy in this thread is a result of his constant showing off his money, video games, car parts, etc. He came across as pen 15y, and it annoyed a lot of people (myself included). He's gotten his comeuppance, and hopefully he'll learn from it.

LOL It's all good man, if this is the impetus for you getting a better job, you'll look back and be thankful that it happened this way. I do hope you find someplace that will appreciate your dedication more than your old Sonic manager ever did.

It's just that...I've been on the outside looking in at this thread (remaining Switzerland) and I'm more confused now than when I put cement all over the dog. That was a genuine "WTF?!" moment.

I worked there 3 years if they where going to fire me they should of done it a long time ago and nothing i did in the last week was really that bad and i still worked 65 hours last week.

But i got all the cougar XR7 parts paided for i just need to pay the labor on the build so a few more weeks and maybe $2000 more and it should be running and looking like new.

Also i still owe the bank for the 88 T-bird so i can't go more than a week or so without a job i think i only owe about $3,000 and i took out a $4,000 loan on it but i hope i get a job again that i can pay it off ASAP.

The way i see it the sonic i worked at was less than a mile form my house and i have lived on this part of town for 15+ years and that sonic has only been open for 5 years. So it felt like getting kicked out my house since i lived up there and i knew everyone by name or at their least car or cars.

I was about 8mins early to work took one order got called over by my boss and fired and he did not even fill out my 3rd Write up or even talk anything out which after 3 years working 6 days a week most of the time and 40-80+ hours a week i felt that he could of at least talk it out.

He's gonna ban your ass if you don't stop mangling the English language.  It is "pay", "paid", "paid" (present, past, past participle).  No such word as "paided" any more than "wented", "renteded", "washeded", "spelleded", or "wisheded".

In any case, good luck with the finances, and remember to work smarter, not just harder.

I beg to differ! ;)

Carpimp, I'm going to give you some advice. Go download Mozilla Firefox (http://"http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US") (version 3.0 is pretty awesome) and install the English Dictionary (http://"https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/28917/united_states_english_dictionary-3.0.3-fx+tb+sm.xpi") Addon (I assume you would be using the US version. I stick with good old UK English, because it's.......... actually a language. ;) Canadian English gives me the willies too, so I'm not being racist.). Just keep an eye on your post before you hit submit. If you've spelled it wrong, right-click on the word and it will give you suggestions. You'll learn to spell this way, and in the mean time the rest of us can keep our hair on our head. :hick:

Great advice - that's one of my favorite features of Mozilla. Most of the kids these days grow up speaking "text-speak" on their little internet games, I have to yell at my kids when I am IMing them from work "speak English  it!!!!" Anyway, Firefox can ensure that your internet posts are spelled correctly (though it won't fix misuse of words) & you will also learn to spell correctly over time. I still have issues spelling certain words so I love it.

The add-on sounds like a good feature, but what happened to people knowing grammar and spelling without a machine or some program doing it for them.  Don't get me wrong -- it is a useful tool, but I feel it should not be used as a crutch.

Yet something else that the human race gives up; the ability to communicate through written word.  I guess all those conspiracy theorists who say machines will rule humans one day have some bone of contention;)

Wow,  This thread got railroaded....
Title: after 3 years at sonic i got fired for eating a 1/2 price burger on burger night
Post by: oldraven on July 18, 2008, 10:05:48 AM
It can be used as a crutch. I learned to spell and use proper grammar by reading as much as I possibly could. Reading books, that is. (<- I know this is not proper grammar..... just as this isn't) Reading blogs will just make you worse, in the end.

But, I do type fast. And it's nice to be able to go back and see where you typed 'teh' instead of 'the'.

Overall, if you want to learn to spell, pick up a book. That way your vocabulary will grow as well as your spelling/grammar skills.

Actually what I meant was using it in place of learning the grammar and spelling at all.  As I said it is a good tool for the purposes you stated exactly.

There are instances where you can't use it though and you should have a grasp of the language that you use in everyday life.

I was always fairly poor in grammar, just paying attention to others writings has helped me greatly... Still I'm far from a grammatical genius, but I feel most could learn a thing or three if they would just pay attention to others writings... A perfect example would be Dare... Like him or not, he made a huge improvement in his postings in just a few months...

I give folks the benefit of a doubt, but if their writings continue to look like a 2nd graders, I mostly ignore them... I've quit reading posts without spacing, punctuation and poor grammar in general...

BTW, I use Fire Fox as my browser and do rely fairly heavily on it's spell check feature... I can't spell all that well, but I know when it looks correct...

That's where it's really handy. The words I can't spell are words that 99% of the population would never use in the internet anyway! :hick:

I got a job today making $9 a hour insted of $7.25 that sonic was paying me so i will get both cars moving along and next year will be looking for my 3rd car i hope.

This did not get to much more messed up than the other 2 on different car forums all together so since i got a new job that will still let me fix up my cars then go ahead and mess this up some more or stop by and say something nice.

I was 5, my brother was 3. We had watched my dad mix up some cement the night before for a sidewalk repair. We said, "Hey...we have sand in the sandbox, and water from the garden hose, and dad left a bag of cement mix laying around, and here's the wheelbarrow..."

The rest is pretty much history. ;)

Are you sure you didn't get fired for your spelling and grammar?

A friend of mine had a great quote on jobs. "After you get your check for your two weeks' work, you and them are even."  In other words, they don't owe you another day and you don't owe them another day.  You just start it over again the next pay period if you both agree it's a good marriage.

Its almost like everyone knows carpimp wont retaliate.  He never really has stepped up and played ball back with all the foul balls thrown at him about grammer.

Based on his location,, armadillo tx, its likely he is among many who have trouble.  I will bet his spanish is top knotch but his english is really bad. I know his english is bad and I really could care less to make it such a big deal on a car site.

What i fnd most disturbing is a bunch of men on a grease and monkey site worried about spelling.  Its certainly not a topic that hits my garage while tossing back a few beers and wrenching.  There really isnt a problem bringing it up but to go on page after page about it sounds queer to me.

Only 1 time got in a fight after work only hit the kid 2 times and he ran out past the middle of the street he had got fired 3 times kept coming back to work and wanted to talk shiznit everyday. I was everyones hero for a few weeks and everyone got to LOL.

I can't stop the pages so i told as much of the story as i felt like typing and i can't lock this thread so it just keeps going and going and as long as everyone has fun even if its jokes towards me. The jokes never stop but at least i got a better job out of the deal and i can still afford car parts.

More than anything I'm annoyed by people not using their real names or not putting their real names in their signature at the very least.  I have no idea who Carpimp is, even though I've seen pre-Carpimp Fila.  If I can associate with a person's real name then I can have more respect for them, like Carpimp here, whoever he may be in real life, he doesn't seem that bad.  He at least puts up with a lot of  so I guess he likes it here.
