after going for a rip in Claudes cat (and the fact that my car used 5 liters of oil to and from CJ) I decided enough of the SO ...
and started the HO/E303/mass air conversion today. here is the progress after 1.5 hours:

Here is a pic of the baffle that is causing the oil burning issue. I seen some people give me a funny look when I triied explaining the issue to them:
DO NOT buy a cheap chinese intake! uless you like having a motor that burns as much oil as gas....
Now I just have to go out and pull the heads, pull the timing case cover and throw the E cam in and put my ported E7's on it.
Dam ron,you should have said something sooner, i had the afternoon off work today and would have helped ya out.
O well lol.
Tom moss has the pattern for downloading the larger baffle,on his web sight. But I do believe your goin a different route.
No Im not actually, could you send me the link for it?
thanks for the offer Chris, would have apprecitated it.
I just got done opening up the cambers in the heads and removing the ERG hump from the exhaust ports, and putting some colour on them.

I am done for the day, gotta get a Balancer puller tonight and finish the tear down in the morning.
Im actually impressed at the condition of the motor inside. with over 200miles there is no feelable wear on the cylinder walls, and you can still see the cross hatch in them...
Can I have the Cobra intake? The upper alone will be fine. You don't need that Chinese made .LOL.
I just want that 5.0 Cobra plaque! hahahaha
Thats a lot of progress in 1.5 hours. I have the feeling you've done this before ;)
many times... if all goes well I should have it buttoned back up and just the wiring left for tomorrow.
and vinne, the upper is the only good part about it.... the lower is what the chinese screwed up on...
I got a real one from a 93 cobra ron,but..............you can't have it as it's on my car hahahahahahahahlol.
Just ribbin ya.
im still amazed you dont work on your cars over pavement. i keep picturing you picking up parts and wiping the grass and dirt off of them. LOL!
lol, I make sure I dont drop anything, and IF I do I have a parts washing bin I wash them off in...
total disassembly is done, cam is out and waiting for morning to clean all the gasket surfaces and start slapping it back together....
haha Mine may be a knock off but it still works, lol.... I will just make a better baffle for it.
Does this mean, If you come over to help me, I have to pull the car out on the lawn?
^very funny ass hat, LOL. j/k
Lol
J/k
hmmm, I was just reviewing my notes, and apparently the E cam wont work, so I will be using a stock HO cam I guess...
Why won't the e-cam work?????????? your going mass.
You know the oil burning with the small baffel GT40 lower is a known problem. Actually Ford made a larger baffel factory equipment on the Explorer lowers, which is what I have on my car. It burns no oil. I could get you a pic but I'd have to pull my intake off, which I'm not doing just for a pic. ;) The funny thing is the stock SO lower that was on my T-bird has the same baffel as your Chinese GT40 lower and it burned no oil....... Look here for the baffel pattern: http://www.tmossporting.com/tabid/336/Default.aspx
Does the E303 cause valve/piston contact even with the E7 heads? I though vinnie was running an E303 with flat tops and E7s?
Vinnie is running the E with flat tops.
It shouldn't as it is still under .500" lift,i think that is the biggest cam you can install with those pistons.
However i would still check ptv clearance.
it gets old quick, I have to do the same thing......
thanks for the info on the intake that I arleady knew... ask anybody that talked to me at CJ... ;) I cant get that download to work.... can someone post a full size pic of it on here?
and Vinnie, chime in before I go too far... I already have the HO cam and lifters back in, but if it is safe to run the E303, I will swap it back out....
EDIT: ok I just read his sig, thats what is says... well screw it, I will go out and yank the stocker and throw the E in if it dont work I will swap in a complete low milage explorer motor....
wish I could have gone to CJ to see all the cars...
Glad to hear it RJ, guess I'll have to step up my game too.
hell at least let me catch up first! LOL.
got the E cam in, lifters bolted in and the Pete Jackson Gear drive bolted up, and the timming cover modified to fit....

Taking a little drink break, its freaking hot out there. I gotta bike up to the parts store in a minute and get some gasket sealer now before I go any further......
looking good!
noisy gear unit??
yep... found a nice little surprise when I cleaned the tops of the pistons off too... it is a 306!
got the timming cover on, water pump on, and the block all cleaned and ready for the heads to go on.... just eating supper, then I will go out and tackle it again. goal it to get the rad back in, heads torqued down, and all the accesories back on tonight.
as long as you can afford to take a break come on down
and throw the HO motor in my XR7. looks like brand new
inside. had the pan off and a borescope in it. you can probably
swap it out in a couple hours.
keep the pics coming .cant wait to hear it.--irv
I'm still surprised Vinnie didn't speak up!,Check your pm's trying to send the pattern.
What pistons? or is it that worn.
here is a pic of the pistons:

and here is how the motor sits for the night:

the only thing left to do is bolt on the intakes, change all the fluids, and do the mass air conversion.
Exhaust is bolted back up, heads and rockers are torqued down, all the accesories and fan is in, rad is in... should be up and running tomorrow...
Where's the A/C ron???????????
gone! I think the line going into the evaporator in the heater box has a crack in it, so I got rid of the AC.
Should have just changed out the evap,3.0h job to be sure but well worth it with the humidity in ontario.
You going to mapleview tommorow if you get her running?????
Might be there if it doesn't thunderstorm.
I cant this week, but I will be there next week.
Np
His A/C is in the same place as mine. S PILE!
Looks great so far RJ. You going to modify the baffle for your cobra intake, or just try to find an explorer lower?
just got done making a baffle for it... THANKS Kitzdnm! I went to my parents place and printed out the template off of T Moss' site...

now I am just waiting for a buddy to get off work so I can go grab a set of 19lb'ers off of him, then I gotta figure out the wiring... Where is the info for wiring up the MAS?
AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGH !!!!!!! Sorry for the delay.I JUST read all the posts.Man,I've been slacking....a LOT !! My E303 is working great, lumpy idle (has scared off a few potential races),and I've had ZERO interference with my pistons (flat tops).I've had the car to at least 6,ooo rpm's with no worries.(I need a factory tach that goes to 8,000).Anyway,I have the E-303,works great, and the Mass Air ,well,it's all in the signature. No worries at all.Go ahead and get it done and don't lose any sleep over it.Next up,my 5 speed.HOPEFULLY the pedal assembly will be in saturday.Any work I do I'll take pics.I haven't had the time and or weather to do anything.Saturday will be the start I hope.
http://www.coolcats.net/tech/advanced/massair.html
:brick:
DOH!! I was looking at an old version I printed... thanks.... now one more quick question...
I dont have those colors (except the red one) in my MAS harness, so I am going to assume that they are in order from the red one going from right to left?.... my next wire is yellow/black stripe, (ground) then yellow/white stripe,(MAF signal ground) then yellow/Red stripe (MAF signal)... I took the harness from my old '89 3.8L SC XR-7 harness...
guess it wont hurt to just try it, just as soon as the rain quits....
what ecm are you using?
I'm using an A9P.I'll probably keep the same computer for the 5 speed swap as well since it goes both ways.LOL.
vinnie-did you ever find out for sure you got the ecm
i sent you ? never heard .hope all is going great--irv
A9L
Edit:
Just came in from working on it... 12:33am...
only thing left to do is change the oil, and wire up the MAS, then hit the key and hope it starts... should have it up and running in the morning....

I sent you a email with a simple easy to use diagragm.
Here it is.
Vinnie- hows the low end with that e cam??
Hey isnt that the scan I posted awhile ago
the moss pattern wont download the conversion filter.
is it something that can be posted?--irv
It might be,had it for a while.
Don't think you'll have any problems with the e-cam but did you turn the engine over by hand a few reveloutions to make sure she's not contacting??????
O on a side note, lol, when you install the maf wires make sure to leave them about a foot or so longer than needs be just incase you ever want to install a supercharger as it relocates the maf to inside the fender and i ended up having to lengthen mine which kinda sucked.
SHE IS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes I turned it by hand first, lol, you should know I know what Im doing by now Chris... hahaha... I left some extra, but not a foot... if anything It will probably get a Holset next.
(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/88%20XR7%20Cougar/th_MOV05060.jpg) (http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/88%20XR7%20Cougar/?action=view¤t=MOV05060.flv)
gear drive!
Just double checkin man,i know you and your luck with 5.0L's LOL.
I'll have to wait till i get home to hear it(at work)you take her for a rip yet???????
You know i was thinking about it,did you change the fuel pump out????
Also 19lbers are a little weak for that combo unless you up the pressure with an apfr,24's sound about right now.
Way to go Ron!! Sounds better at start-up than mine did!!! oh yea... it was ALL fresh...lol
Welcome to my world !!!!!
I like it ,another e303 running on flat tops.Nice job.
Oh,the low end is pretty good from a dead stop. The car gets a little rubber in all the gears.I do believe the H.O cam was a little better on the low end though. But when you hit the mid range, awesome. The car LOVES the higher rpms....a LOT.
Wait to you put the t5 in there is no low rpm .
Thanks guys...
Vinnie.... I like your world... LOL.
yea she moves out REALLY nice now...:burnout: I will have it at the track tomorrow night to see what she will pull. Looking for a mid to low 14....
Yeah Chris I think I will upgrade to a set of 24's and a 155lph pump next, then a set of gears.... THEN the T5
and yes, Gear drive.... Love 'em
I think 13's is possible, what gear do you have?
I'm installing my pedal assembly saturday and then,5 SPEED !!!!! I JUST got my new bearing retainer and firewall cable adjuster.I'm ready for action. With the T-5,I should be able to knock down a 9 second 1/4 mile time.LOL
I dont think it will run a 13 with out a gear... right now I have 3.08's so I am expecting a 14.3 or so... if its faster.. wahooo.... but I dunno. We'll see tomorrow.
I have been out cruising around all day, and LOVING the new found power! Need a shift kit and 'verter now..
Without a converter and 3.73 gears, don't expect better than a very high 14....
yeah, I will just be happy to break out of the 16's.... LOL.
Sounds good :D The gear drive gives it a blower whine sound.
BTW whos holding the camera? It sounds like a little kid (who seems to like the loud noise the car makes ;) ).
Just watch with that stock pump as it is gonna be lean.
You got more than a stock HO and a less than an HO pump.
Yeah get a better pump! Remember this?;) http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=13859&highlight=fuel+pump+ho+swap
thanks, now that I have some miles on it, it is getting louder  The camera is on my tripod, with my boy behind it... he loves the car.
Yeah I am going to run it as is tonight then swap out the pump for a 155lph unit after I go to STEEDA's dyno day. :D
So,what are the 1/4 times?
I posted them in the race section with a video clip....
new best of 14.835 @ 94.84MPH (check my sig... ;))
just heading out to get it dynoed.... we'll see what kind of power she is putting down...
I'd love to hear what those are.I wonder what mine is?No dyno around here.
ok guys just an update... after the BS I went through this week with the AOD it pushed me over the edge, so I went and bought a clutch today, and the T5 conversion has begun right now... just came in to change into work clothes and go out and get her done... I will take pics of the major parts along the way... will update tonight when I am done it... (hopefully...)
Ugh, I hate you! I still have 10 more days till I get to do mine :(
Good luck.It's a great swap.I love mine.
LOL, yeah I know... kinda stole your thunder huh? LOL....:flip:
Yeah I did it to my '88 5.0L HO Thunderbird, and loved it... hoping this gets me in the low 14's high 13's....:D :shakeass:
T5 swap is almost done....
got the pedals in first, since I knew they were a B***H... especially having to do it twice in one night.....
here is the AOD on the ground:
no AOD trans anymore:

and T5 is now in place and bolted down...:
Only thing left to do tomorrow is remove the B&M AOD shifter, fill up the T5, do the wiring for the backup lights, and put the starter and exhaust back in, and go for a rip....
That's awesome! I CANT WAIT to do my swap!
the hardest part are the pedals... god are they a nightmare, even with air tools... my Tbird the pedals werent too bad, but this thing fought me the entire time... Will have a drive video tomorrow of it... gonna be EXTREMELY hard babying it for 500 miles....
What wiring for the backup lights? My T-5 plugged right into the AOD harness, good to go.No mods,no cutting,no thing.Plug and play.
for the neutral saftey swtich? Mine didnt, had to cut the plug of and re wire it...
She is DONE, and I drove it out of the barn on its own power... I am going in for a quick shower then going for a test drive... will post a video later tonight....
They have a plug on top of the tunnel... Just swap harnesses, no cutting ...
cool nice, HO and t-5 swap done at same time! That should hold you off for awhile
my t5 didnt have that harness on it, so for now that is what I did... I will try to locate a proper harness for it as right now I dont have back up lights...
nope not good enough.... dont get me wrong it is great, and now it is a BLAST to drive! but still not enough... might be intsalling a vortech or a paxton next, this weekend.... we'll see....
I wish I had that kind of money.LOL.
I wish I did too.:hick: .. I am unemployed.(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/trailer20park.gif)... but The turbo poop is hopefully sold this weekend, so I will be using some of the cash from its sale to purchase the blower. ..
ARG! what is it with my luck lately.... just got in from a test rip and the tranny is leaking from someplace... looks like it is at the joint were the tail stock bolts to the main body... :punchballs: :toilet: now I have to tear into it AGAIN!!!! christ I am getting sick of being under this car....
screw it I am going camping tomorrow and will deal with it after the weekend...
When you get back into it,just slow down and take your time. You were in a mad hurry this time.A couple of days to gather your thought may not hurt anything.
not really hurrying... really... ask baXo how quick I work.... I THINK I found the problem, though... aparrently these things dont take 5.0L's of tranny fuild... LOL I just pulled the Fuild check plug and got 2 liters of oil out, so hopefully this fixes it....
Going for a test rip now....
Problem solved... :dunce:
I tried to fill me tranny up to specs after i did the floor shifter... Iwish i would have known then what I know now. There was so much money I wasted on wasted fluid
here is a quick clip of me running through the gears:
(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/88%20XR7%20Cougar/th_MOV05322.jpg) (http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb170/1WLDBRD/88%20XR7%20Cougar/?action=view¤t=MOV05322.flv)
ENJOY...
Nice !!! How fast were going when you hit 5th?
according to the speedo 100mph.... but I know the speedo is out as I am using the AOD gear in it for now, till I can get the proper one....
before you buy one,let me know exactly which one you need.I believe mine needs the 20 tooth gear, and that leaves me a few extras that I bought and can't use. When you figure it out, shoot me your address and I'll hook you up.
I need the yellow one for a T5.... for now, getting gears soon too... just dont know which ratio I want yet...
I have the 19 tooth ready for my 3.27s
Its been a while but you have to look inside your t-5 and see what color your drive gear is. Some are 7 tooth and some are 8 tooth if I'm remembering correctly.
lets see some new times
Actually,I have three white gears and they all have different teeth. You need a tooth count.
There are some buzzing around with 6 tooth drive gears too...but I believe those are only in 4-cyl cases.
Late 89-93 all had 8 tooth speedo drive gears. Part #' starting with F0ZR and FZZR should have 8 tooth drive gears.
Part #'s starting with E3ZR through E6ZR should all be equipped with the 7 tooth drive gear...trans tag SHOULD be on the left side of the case...unless it was removed for some reason.
Good luck,
Don
Nice work on all the swap items. Car sounds good in the videos. Now we just need pictures of those long black marks by your driveway :D
Nice work on the trans swap! It looks like we've got a number of people going 5 speed now. And the car does sound good, you can tell it has an e cam. :D
Sounds good and nice pioneer cd player and don't tell me that car is doen i know you got more plans for it.
yeah I got lots more in store for it.... just waiting to get back to work....
I just got a set of meats for the next time at the track....:

I have a race booked at Sparta in 2 weeks against an '01 Bullitt, a '78 Mustang II with a 5.0L, and a 5.0L HO Fairmont, so I need some traction...
