Title: 88 Cougar 302 starter removal help needed.
Post by: Dusty on July 13, 2008, 01:32:46 AM
Would appreciate advice on getting to the top bolt on the starter for removal.  Starter pinion whirrrrs but doesn't engage flywheel.  Broke down at a Circle K so won't be able to leave it too long.

Thanks in advance.

Dusty,
When I had to take the starter out of my parts car, I took off the passenger wheel and went in through one of the holes in the suspension area. Being in a parking lot, that might be hard, but thats what I had to do in my garage.

I had to use a couple long extentions and a universal (swivel) socket as well. but it was a lot easier than trying to do it coming up from the bottom.

Hope it Helps

John

Thanks for help.  It went down exacly as you described.Wheel off, extensions and wobbly's.  If I would of started from there I would of seen that the problem was the top bolt had already started backing out and was the source of the problem.  Maybe could of got it back in enough to start the engine  another time or two and get back home to work in the driveway.  Live and learn.  I would have to go with other recomendation to Loc-Tite the threads too.

I think to get that top bolt from under the car is nearly impossible without ramps, lights and goggles to keep all the  from falling in your eyes.

Thanks to all.
