My dad just bought an 88 Cougar LS V6. He's having it converted to R-134 but apparently they can't find a compressor for it. Anyone have one they can part with or know a cross-reference for a part number?
wont the stock ones work with 134A. ihavent heard of anyone

As far as I know you can retrofit the old R-12 with R-134. I think the only difference is R-134 requires some sort of oil mixture.
The problem is, the stock one is leaking.
Would one from a V6 Ranger work?
I believe the 88 3.8L used a scroll compresssor build by Nippondenso for use with R12. But i'm not sure if they ever made that compressor to work with R134A. R134A compressor usually have better seals because R134 leaks out easier than R12. That being said...I ran my converted 88 3.8L compressor on R134 for many years and it worked fine...just had to add about 1 can of R134 a year to keep it cold.

They were generally regarded as marginal compressors. They cannot be rebuilt. The shaft seal is made of viton, which is incompatible with R-134a. Ford recommended against using the HR980 with R-134a. In the real world, I don't how well the HR980 tolerates R-134a.
Your two alternate options are to buy a retrofit kit - which is shown in that e-bay link, or to grab the RH side accessory brackets from an '86 3.8L with the 6P148A compressor.
Neither option is cheap since you'll need all new hoses and a new compressor.
If you can find a stock non leaking 88 compressor it should work fine with R-143A. I've had mine flushed and refilled with R-143A for two years and it doesn't leak at all. Works fine so far.
I'm running R134a and aHR980 compressor. had it that way for about 5yrs now. No problems what so ever. I will tell you to get the Auto adjusting orifice tube.
